‘Women’s Murder Club’ Closes Season One
Angie Harmon and Team Call It a Wrap
Tonight marks the first-season finale of the rookie ABC crime procedural Women’s Murder Club after just nine installments. The cast and crew of the series only managed to film ten of thirteen ordered episodes before the writers strike got underway, and the last one, “FBI Guy,” premieres at 9:02pm EST.
The female-oriented drama consistently earned respectable ratings on what is roundly considered a dismal night for television shows. Nevertheless, the fact that it often surpassed its main rival, fellow freshman Moonlight on CBS, in total viewers can’t erase the reality of dismal viewership in the coveted advertising demographic consisting of adults aged 18 to 49. That’s where CBS’ supernatural drama spurred on its momentum following a disastrous pilot by maintaining a sizable lead over the competition, most notably including Murder Club.
Although the San Francisco-based series hasn’t been officially renewed yet, I’d bet the odds are pretty good it will return to the tube later. CBS’ desire to tone down its (deserved) reputation as the Old Fogey Network is a given, but canceling a show that actually leads its time slot on viewer-challenged Friday nights doesn’t seem like the best way to do that. Harmon and girlfriends aren’t gone for good.
