SECTIONS: Damages, Renewals

Well, I’ll Be! ‘Damages’ Good for Two More Seasons!

FX Stuns with Unconditional Support for Low-Rated Legal Drama

Glenn Close/Damages I guess that’s what being not just a star but a *STAR* gets you these days when it comes to basic-cable networks with time and wisdom on their side. Although FX’s latest highly promoted and very adult series Damages tanked in the ratings, Glenn Close, quality performances, and widespread critical acclaim were apparently enough to maintain executives’ confidence in the maze-like series. Monday, FX officially announced that the show will return for not just one, but two seasons.

The news makes it kind of hard to believe that not too long ago, many were concerned that Damages would not be renewed at all. Each broadcast after the July premiere resulted in disappointingly dismal Nielsen numbers, and the ratings tumbled rapidly over the course of its 13-episode rookie run. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if other networks had faith as strong as FX’s in their well-constructed yet poorly watched TV shows? That way, events like the whole CBS Jericho/nuts debacle could be avoided all together.

According to the FX press release, the intoxicating thriller will come back in the form of two additional 13-episode seasons, the first set to begin with Close and her co-stars Rose Byrne and Tate Donovan billed as regulars. Filming of season two commences early in 2008 in New York, and I can only hope that showrunners at least attempt to address the issues that made Season One a no-go for many viewers, starting with the frequent flashbacks sans any indication what time frame they occurred in. Otherwise, ever onward.
