Tom Selleck Rides Again as Jesse Stone

Fifth Flick to Air in March

When CBS aired the first entertaining Jesse Stone made-for-TV flick Stone Cold way back in 2005, who knew the series based on Robert B. Parker‘s bestsellers would still be going strong three years and three movies later? Now, CBS has announced that fans can look forward to more Tom Selleck in the lead role when Jesse Stone: Thin Ice premieres on March 1st.

During his latest adventures in crime, Paradise police chief Jesse Stone manages to get entangled in a Boston gunfight that leads to further tension with the Council above and beyond the members’ irritation with him for firing a prolific ticket writer and causing decreased town revenue. And, if that’s not enough for a two-hour span, the shootout on the street puts Stone in the crosshairs of the Boston Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division, which affects Stone’s involvement with the search for a prominent woman’s missing child in Paradise.

The lineup for the fifth installment proves the network isn’t skimping on talent, either. In addition to regulars Kathy Baker, Kohl Sudduth, Stephen McHattie, and William Devane, all of whom reprise their previous roles, the cast includes Ghost Whisperer‘s Emmy and Golden Globe winner Camryn Manheim, The Glass Menagerie Emmy winner Joanna Miles, and former 24 star Leslie Hope.

Manheim plays Elizabeth Blue, the woman whose child goes missing, while Miles is Mrs. Steinberg, a Paradise resident who assists Chief Stone during the search for the child, and Hope portrays Internal Affairs investigator Sidney Greenstreet. Unfortunately (at least for us fans), original cast member Viola Davis — a current Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for Doubt — won’t be along for the ride. Maybe next time.

Jesse Stone: Thin Ice will premiere on Sunday, March 1, at 9pm EST, so mark those calendars right now. And, never fear, because the series definitely won’t be ending then — a sixth installment, Jesse Stone: No Remorse, is already filming.

  1. I have been wishing for a long time for another “Jesse Stone” movie. Now I will get my wish. I know it is a lot of work and that Mr. Selleck is probably enjoying semi-retirement, but I wish that we could at least have four or five Jesse Stone movies each year. I “love” the character he plays and the way he play the character — very complicated character. I would like to see Jesse Stone have a minute or two of happiness each movie.

    1. …I wish that we could at least have four or five Jesse Stone movies each year…

Oh, wouldn’t that be divine?! I’d be front row and center for each and every one. As it is, I’m grateful for the two movies I know are coming this year. The Jesse Stone series is definitely one worth having around for long time, and 95 percent of that is directly due to the magnificent Tom Selleck.

  2. Dang it, I missed “Jesse Stone: Thin Ice”! Do you think they will replay it sometime this year or next? I certainly hope so…I hate not know what happened in the latest installment.

    1. I know the feeling of missing something on TV you really wanted to see, Jenny. Although I don’t recall CBS ever repeating the Jesse Stone flicks, I know you can get them on DVD eventually. The first four installments are out right now, so it shouldn’t be long before Thin Ice is released, too.

  3. Why doesnt the black actress who plays MOlly the Dispatcher get any credit in any of these DVDs for TV movies? I have seen her in other productions – I feel that she is a good filter – and actress – for Selleck to work with. whats up with this?

    1. Oscar nominee Viola Davis plays Molly in the first four Jesse Stone TV movies, Carlos, but she’s no longer acting in the series, I believe. I personally think she gets as much credit as her supporting role deserves, but if it seems like there’s less credit these days, it’s probably because she’s moved on to other opportunities. Davis certainly is fantastic whenever her character is on-screen, though.
