Tom Selleck Possibly Heading to ‘Las Vegas’

TV’s Magnum, P.I. and Jesse Stone Contemplating Leaving the Law for Sin City

Tom Selleck/Jesse Stone Very nice. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Tom Selleck, one of the most appealingly rugged leading men in television history, is considering taking over the top spot in NBC’s casinos-and-craps drama Las Vegas. If a deal goes through, Selleck would play the Montecito Resort & Casino’s new owner, a role created to lessen the pain of former star James Caan‘s March 9, fourth-season-finale departure as the previous boss of the casino’s surveillance team for four years.

Selleck is widely known—especially among female fans—for the handsome, mustachioed appearance that belies his considerable acting talent. A veteran of scores of television and feature film projects, the lead of CBS’ Emmy-winning, Hawaii-based drama Magnum, P.I. for eight years has recently become closely associated with the hard-luck, small-town New England police chief he plays in CBS’ occasional two-hour Jesse Stone telefilms, all of which are based on American author Robert B. Parker‘s best-selling detective novel series of the same name.

[Interesting trivia: Parker's Spenser novel series was also responsible for helping give life to ABC's 1985–1988 mystery series Spenser: For Hire, starring Robert Urich in the title role and Avery Brooks as his friend Hawk. The show later spawned four TV movies that debuted during the years 1993 to 1995.]

The fourth installment of the popular CBS Jesse Stone chronicles, Jesse Stone: Sea Change, is slated to premiere at 9pm EST on May 20. Hopefully, by then, viewers will also know the fate of Selleck’s potential next gig at NBC.
