Despite the vast amount of effort put into keeping details about the next X-Files flick under wraps, it looks like a title has finally been allowed to emerge from the secretive camp. And since a high-profile media entity like the Associated Press reported the news and directly attributed it to series creator Chris Carter, I guess it’s safe for us all to believe that the X-Files sequel is officially called The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

Hmmm… Well, if you watched the TV series during its nine-season run and paid attention, you probably already know where those familiar words after the colon come from. That’s right — that bareboned and butt-ugly UFO poster hanging on the wall in certified head believer Fox Mulder’s office.

Honestly — the thing was as stark and unappealing as the basement digs were. I also can’t say much more about the choice of the poster’s slogan as the movie’s title. It’s boring at worst, familiar at best, and hardly exciting either way.

In any case, I don’t want to believe because I already do. I also really want to just see the darn movie and wish the July 25 release date would hurry up and get here.

…at last.

As fans of The X-Files know, there’s been a lot of speculation regarding the lack of a title for the highly anticipated film sequel hitting theaters this summer on July 25. Movie website IESB.net reported yesterday, however, that the standoff between series creator Chris Carter and production studio 20th Century Fox has finally ended. Yes, the forthcoming flick has a title now, and it isn’t the incredibly tacky The X-Files: Done One.

According to IESB.net, the top two title picks were Carter’s X-Files: Full Moon Rising and studio executives’ X-Files: Curse of the Werepeople, both reflecting the werewolf theme of the picture. Thank goodness Carter has won the battle.

So, there you have it. If this development is correct, the second X-Files movie is entitled X-Files: Full Moon Rising. Sounds like a winner, although I plan to see the movie no matter what they call it. Even a tacky title can’t keep me away from more Mulder and Scully.

Note: Make sure to click all the links on the original IESB.net story.

William Shatner aside, talented writer, producer, and director J.J. Abrams sure knows how to build a bigger, better audience for his forthcoming Star Trek feature flick. Exclusive news published this weekend at UGO Movie Blog indicates that Abrams has cast his fellow talented writer, producer, director, and actor Tyler Perry in the movie that fans are salivating to see. That’s right—Madea is going into outer space.

According to UGO, Perry’s gig has already started since he was spotted shooting a scene with two major cast members and extras about two weeks ago. To find out more about exactly who Perry will be playing, including whether the character is human or not, read the original article “Tyler Perry’s Star Trek Movie Adventure.”

This news comes completely out of the blue, but it sounds like a solid casting move if it’s indeed true. Perry is hugely and rightfully popular, a true embodiment of just how much talent and tons of hard work can achieve in Hollywood. With him onboard, Star Trek gets the built-in audience of a respected entertainer, which should only add to the movie’s hype and box office numbers. Smart thinking, J.J.!

Apolo Player to Star in Two Future Flicks

According to Bloody-Disgusting, last year’s Kristen Bell horror flick Pulse has not one but two sequels in store for fans, despite the fact that the American adaptation of the 2001 Japanese original Kairo flopped both with critics and moviegoers, earning a paltry $20.26 million stateside on an initial $20 million investment. The two new installments in the franchise, Pulse 2: Afterlife and Pulse 3: Invasion, reportedly begin filming back-to-back this month in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Essentially a film about suicide-inducing evil phantoms that take over computers after a virus establishes a connection between the realm of the dead and the world of the living, the atmospheric yet poorly plotted 2006 Hollywood version starred Lost‘s Ian Somerhalder and Grammy-nominated singer Christina Milian, in addition to Veronica Mars icon Bell.

Moviehole.net additionally reports that Jamie Bamber—better known as Battlestar Galactica‘s Captain Lee “Apollo” Adama to most—was recently cast in the two Pulse sequels slated for 2009. He will portray a divorced father and businessman named Stephen who, after frakking up his own marriage following an affair, hides in the mountains while trying to protect his daughter from the phantom of her dead mother.

The second and third installments, both written and directed by career horror producer, writer, and director Joel Soisson, will be released in direct-to-video format and will feature none of the original Hollywood version’s cast members. Of course, the last comes as no surprise given the widespread flak the film received before it even hit theaters, which makes direct-to-video sound about right. That way, the sequels can take better advantage of Bamber’s huge fan following and the support of those people who did appreciate last year’s visually captivating release, without the threat of a prominent critical thrashing looming overhead.

Bloody-Disgusting gives the following synopsis for Pulse 2: Afterlife.

The world has been reshaped by the invasion of ghosts via the wireless internet. Cities are deserted, technology has been destroyed and the few remaining human beings eschew anything electrical in order to avoid a confrontation with the soulless ghosts that now wander the planet. Most of the ghosts are doomed to a repetitive loop of something they did while they were still despairing humans (a man repeatedly hangs himself, for example), but there are some ghosts so locked in denial, they do not know they are dead. They continue to haunt their homes, wrapped in fear that their souls will soon be torn from them.

And the synopsis for Pulse 3: Invasion is as follows.

It is now seven years later and the survivors on Earth have settled into a primitive lifestyle completely void of electronics. The clusters of human survivors live together in refugee camps as the phantoms have taken over the cities. Justine is now a teenager and she escapes to the city to try and make a life for herself where she is not a drain on her adopted family (her parents both became phantoms in part one). She heads in to the city at the urging of Adam, a seeming survivor in the city that lures her with promises of understanding and friendship.

Barnabas Shall Live Again!

If you’ve never had the excellent fortune to see the original Gothic daytime soap opera Dark Shadows that aired weekday afternoons on ABC from 1966 to 1971—not the NBC primetime adaptation that only lasted twelve episodes in 1991, mind you—then do yourself a huge favor and try to get hip to the program with some (admittedly very expensive) DVDs. Although the series began before I was born, I know it well because of my mother and grandmother, who both watched it regularly. In fact, I can attribute my current love of all things spooky in part to Dark Shadows.

Apparently, I’m not the only one either, since actor Johnny Depp has long professed his admiration of the series and one of its central characters, vampire Barnabas Collins (also a favorite of mine), originally played by Canadian actor Jonathan Frid. In the wake of creator Dan Curtis‘ 2006 death and a rights deal just closed with his estate, Depp is now poised to develop and star in a feature film based on the series.

A Depp-ishly good-looking Barnabas? Well, I won’t complain as long as the future film does the former soap justice. Now I’m off to buy those DVDs at Amazon so I can relive the magic.

The original run of Dark Shadows featured assorted actors who each played several distinct and major roles. Located in the fictional town of Collinsport, Maine, the classically eerie Collinwood mansion was the setting for 1225 half-hour episodes revolving around the centuries-old Collins family saga. Innocent Victoria Winters (Swedish actress Alexandra Isles) heads to the mansion when she is hired as the governess for young David Collins (David Henesy).

Nearly a year in real time after her arrival, a cousin named Barnabas Collins visits from England. Unbeknownst to Victoria, however, Barnabas is an almost two-hundred-year-old vampire bent on getting his way at any cost. Other familiar monsters and creatures followed in his wake, including the always indispensable ghosts, witches, and werewolves, making for a truly unique and addictive series. If you search hard enough, you can even find every last single episode on VHS and, soon, DVD. Happy hunting to the interested.

As predicted, Zachary Quinto, the actor who portrays brain-loving Heroes villain Sylar, will play a young Spock in the next installment of the Star Trek film franchise. He is expected to continue his Heroes work, as well, despite this new ultra high-profile gig. In addition, the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, will reprise his role, playing the older version of the iconic pointy-eared character.

Both Quinto and Nimoy joined director J.J. Abrams onstage Thursday at Comic-Con 2007, currently underway in San Diego, where the casting news was officially announced for the first time. The eleventh Star Trek film is preliminarily scheduled for release around Christmas 2008, by which time I assume the role of Captain Kirk will have been cast, too (that was a lame joke, by the way).

Heroes Villain May Next Play Star Trek Icon

A wicked rumor has been spreading like wildfire lately about a potential casting coup concerning the projected Christmas 2008 feature film so creatively dubbed Star Trek XI. As Trekkies worldwide already know, the eleventh film in the Star Trek saga will be directed by television’s current golden boy, J.J. Abrams (Alias, Felicity, Lost). Now come whisperings that Abrams will soon be joined by the actor lucky enough to play half-human, half-Vulcan science officer Spock. His name is Zachary Quinto (24, So noTORIous), probably better known as Heroes‘ Sylar to most people who’ve turned on a television in the past year.

According to E! Online on Monday afternoon, a source “confirms that the Zachary Quinto-as-Spock contract is with the business affairs team at Paramount. Business affairs is generally considered the last stop on the deal-negotiation train. The deal only awaits sign-off from outside counsel.” That sounds like all fans need to do at the moment is wait patiently for the official announcement in coming hours/days. Even the Internet Movie Database has jumped on the speculation, listing Quinto as the rumored next portrayer of Spock site-wide.

The role of beloved alien Mr. Spock was originated and immortalized by New England native Leonard Nimoy during the initial 1960s version of the Star Trek series. Quinto recently catapulted to television prominence himself in NBC’s Heroes, another sci-fi show that is doing a great job thus far of capturing the imaginations and adoration of TV watchers.

Despite the despicable, demented serial killer Sylar that he plays quite effectively, it’s easy to see why the people behind one of next year’s guaranteed biggest movies would take an interest in the bushy eyebrowed thespian. In addition to his distinctive, dark-haired appearance that could easily be molded to mimic a Vulcan, Quinto’s got the comic-book-y dialogue delivery and facial expressions down to a T. Let’s see if he also has what it takes to make the leap from small-screen villainy to big-screen idolatry.

It’s been so long since I last heard word about the long-proposed X-Files film sequel that I’d gone and forgotten about it. Well, my memory has been restored after star David Duchovny‘s revelation this Saturday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, currently underway in Beverly Hills. In town to help promote his forthcoming Showtime half-hour comedy series Californication, which hits the posh premium-cable section of the tube on August 13, the man most famous for playing FBI Special Agent Fox William Mulder in the long-running sci-fi series commented that he’s “supposed to see a script next week.”

In addition, Duchovny confirms that series creator Chris Carter is committed to directing the film and co-writing the script with fellow series veteran Frank Spotnitz, while co-star Gillian Anderson (FBI Special Agent Dana Scully) is due back, as well, to reprise her iconic skeptic role. If all goes well, filming could begin as early as this November in anticipation of a summer 2008 premiere.

Uninitiated potential viewers—and some fans—will also probably be happy to learn that the second big-screen installation reportedly has a standalone plot that will serve as an independent film that people can enjoy no matter how (un)familiar they are with the mythology of the original TV show. Other fans with less-than-stellar memories will just be glad to know they don’t have to brush up on nine years of episodes (for a total of 202—Yikes!) beforehand to get back up to conspiracy-theory speed

Third Flick Finally Gets a Rachel Weisz Replacement

Not only is the third installment of the popular yet frequently derided Mummy franchise written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the same geniuses who created the CW’s most excellent series Smallville, but it now also has another television and film veteran in the starring female role of Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell, the character played in the first two installments by British 2006 Supporting Actress Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz. According to Variety, Maria Bello, who played Dr. Anna Del Amico on NBC’s long-running medical drama ER for a relatively brief time from 1997 to 1998, has signed on to assume the Evelyn role alongside fellow cast members Brendan Fraser (of course), Jet Li, and Michelle Yeoh. Recasting was necessary because Weisz gave director Rob Cohen notice that she had no desire to reprise the role that she originated in the initial blockbusters.

I don’t know about everybody else, but the prospect of seeing Bello—whom I absolutely loved in such films as A History of Violence and Thank You for Smoking—in the same movie with Li and Yeoh is definitely something to look forward to. Weisz will be missed, but the casting of Bello has made the longing decrease already.

British Actress Concerned About Persistent Anorexia Accusations

According to numerous recent reports in primarily European media, Academy Award-nominated actress Keira Knightley revealed in an interview with Elle magazine that she’s considering leaving the acting profession at the ripe old age of 22. The primary motivation for her desire to just have “a life instead” is the unending slew of accusations that have hounded her ever since whenever claiming that the allegedly naturally thin thespian suffers from anorexia. Knightley has always vehemently denied such charges. Apparently, the relentless rumors began taking a toll a while ago, however, and she’s now fed up with women like her being made “scapegoats for promoting a mental illness.”

While I can certainly appreciate the frustration arising from being the target of such incessant rampant rumors, it’s a lowdown dirty shame that people won’t just let the issue go. I’m inclined to believe that Knightley—featured in such international blockbusters as the Pirates of the Caribbean flicks and such sleepers as the highly recommended 2002 British drug-addiction flick Pure—really is innately skinny since I’ve never seen her otherwise. And if she’s not, quite frankly, that’s her business. Cheers to the lady for making her own decisions, no matter how ill-advised or outlandish they may seem to everyone else.
