New TV on DVD: ‘Reno 911!’ Season Six

Show Hits Shelves Before the Season Finale

How’s this for fast? The sixth season of Comedy Central’s improvised cop mockumentary Reno 911! hits stores across the United States today, July 7, exactly one day before the same season’s finale premieres.

That closing episode is called “Wiegel’s Couple’s Therapy,” and it airs tomorrow night at 10:30pm ET. In the meantime, the two-disc Season Six DVD set, Reno 911! The Complete Sixth Season: Uncensored, features all 15 episodes from the current season, as well as over two hours of bonus material that includes:

A digital copy of every episode
Audio commentary with cast members Robert Ben Garant, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Thomas Lennon, Niecy Nash, Ian Roberts, Jo Lo Truglio, and Cedric Yarbrough
Extended and never-before-seen outtakes
The featurette “Profiles in Valor” with new characters Deputy Frank Rizzo (Truglio) and Sergeant Jack Declan (Roberts)

‘The Gong Show with Dave Attell’ Strives for Wild

But Does It Get Close?

Has everyone been checking out Comedy Central’s revival of The Gong Show? The updated version, called The Gong Show with Dave Attell, features a more or less identical setup and array of mind-boggling acts as the original. But with no Chuck Barris in the house, can it achieve the same level of lunacy as its predecessor?

Well, I’m actually not the right person to ask since I haven’t watched the new series yet. But judging from the following clips, it seems Comedy Central’s take on the so-bad-it’s-still-not-good talent competition should be doing a fairly good job of making viewers regularly think “WTF?!”

The show has the 10pm EST time slot in Comedy Central’s Thursday-night lineup, and tonight’s judges are Dave Navarro, Greg Giraldo, and Andy Dick. If you’re not tuning in already and need some motivation, take a look at the following clips. They’re what The Gong Show is all about.

‘The Sarah Silverman Program’ Ends Season One

Sarah Silverman’s New Hit Leaves Comedy Central on a Ratings High

People love to throw around the adjective quirky when talking about things that don’t fit into the normal scheme of things, especially with regards to TV shows and characters. Well, I say if the word fits, then go right ahead and use it, which is why I’m applying it to actress-comic-writer Sarah Silverman‘s new series, descriptively titled The Sarah Silverman Program. An oddly hilarious mixture of scripted vignettes and musical numbers, the show became an instantaneous hit while familiarizing viewers with Silverman’s unconventional take on those little events in life that help define it.

The final installment of the 6-episode debut season closes out the successful rookie run with a cameo appearance by Heroes standout Masi Oka, who plays a store clerk, as well as former Oscar nominee Larry Hankin (live-action short film Solly’s Diner). Predictably, Silverman once again gets mixed up in all kinds of unexpected shenanigans during a simple trip to find new batteries for her TV remote in order to switch the channel from a never-ending charity marathon. Comedy Central officially renewed the half-hour program, its highest-rated new prime-time show in three years, for a sophomore season on February 13, meaning fans can look forward to another 14 quirky episodes starting next fall.
