‘Supernatural’ Creator Promises Hellish Third Season
This Will Be the One to Watch, Says He
In a recent interview with SCI FI Wire, Supernatural creator and executive producer Eric Kripke revealed that the season he’s been waiting for all along is finally on the horizon. According to him, the third time around will be the charm for longtime viewers, as well as “the season to join the party” for uninitiated newcomers. The man who created the show with an absolutely rabidly supportive fan base describes the first and second seasons as the arenas for establishing the series’ underlying mythology and principal players. Now, come the third season, which premieres on October 4, the show will bring to life the title of its second-season finale after brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester begin hunting the demons that escaped through the underworld’s gates in that episode and “All Hell Breaks Loose.” Or maybe we should say all hell breaks even looser since the demons in question have already managed to flee their fiery confines.
Also promised is a recurring theme that will prove less complex than that in the second season, when the Winchester brothers branched beyond Season One’s familial goal of simply finding their father and began to cope with the larger, more intricate threat of the Yellow-Eyed Demon (Fredric Lehne) and its quest for worldwide dominion. Kripke confesses that he thought the change in direction from the first to second seasons was “just okay” and “too complicated,” so much so that “in season three we’re back to a really visceral mythology, which is, ‘It’s war, what do we do?’”
Personally, Kripke and company can make the mythology as simple or complex as they want—I’ll still be watching each and every week. I wasn’t too enthused about the series when it was initially picked up because it sounded like just another teenybopper show. But, as soon as I got a load of the first few episodes’ urban-mythology goody-ness and the fine and oftentimes funny interplay between the two leads, I was hooked.
The third season of The CW’s Supernatural will premiere on Thursday, October 4, at 9pm EST with “The Magnificent Seven.”
