‘Stargate Atlantis’ Run Extended

Deserving Spinoff Gets a Fifth Season

Stargate Atlantis Wednesday was a good day for fans of sci-fi shows, particularly one of the better ones on basic cable’s Sci Fi Channel. That’s because the network announced then that Stargate Atlantis, its strongest performer during the popular Sci Fi Friday lineup, will survive to celebrate its fifth season with twenty brand-new episodes.

Stargate Atlantis, a spinoff of the Stargate SG-1 series that ended last June after a record ten seasons, has recently endured the decreased presence of a central character, Torri Higginson‘s Dr. Elizabeth Weir. To counterbalance that major plot change, Stargate SG-1‘s Amanda Tapping has come onboard. The actress has since provided a somewhat seamless transition to her character Colonel Samantha Carter’s new position in charge of the Stargate Atlantis mission.

The four episodes aired thus far this season have been entertaining and engaging in a non-serialized way that makes it fairly easy to join the series mid-ride. As a result, the present is a good time to start watching if you have a sudden urge to beef up your science-fiction viewing. The best part is knowing that this particular show will return to deliver more excitement next year.

Catch a preview of the next new episode, “Travelers,” right now with the following clip before the installment premieres tonight.
