‘Smith’ Premieres on DirecTV

Crime Drama Begins a Second Run

Virginia Madsen, Valarie Rae Miller, Ray Liotta/Smith

Any Smith fans out there? If so, I’ve got great news for you (and me).

As posted previously, the abbreviated series will get a revival of sorts on satellite network DirecTV tonight when it begins a seven-episode, commercial-free run in High Definition on the 101 Network and DirecTV on DEMAND at 10pm ET. What more could you ask for?

The drama stars Emmy winner Ray Liotta as Bobby Stevens, a professional thief determined to retire and leave his criminal life behind … as soon as he completes a few more jobs with his not-so-merry band of fellow thieves to secure his family’s financial future.

Sideways Oscar nominee Virginia Madsen plays Bobby’s wife Hope, while his partners in crime include The Mentalist‘s Simon Baker as gunman Jeff, Eli Stone‘s Jonny Lee Miller as logistics pro Tom, Franky G (Saw II and III) as transportation man Joe, and Amy Smart (Felicity) as mistress of disguise Annie. At the top of the crook chain, providing the team with leads and selling their stolen loot, is Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo as boss-woman Charlie.

During tonight’s pilot, Bobby & Company take on a job breaking into Chicago’s Tanner Museum. Sounds good, except problems occur, derailing the group’s intricate plan to escape with valuable paintings worth big bucks.

In addition to the central heist, the premiere episode gives a proper introduction to the team members, allowing viewers to observe what makes them tick while leading dangerous double lives. The other side of the law is represented, as well, in the form of Chris Bauer‘s (True Blood) persistent FBI Agent Dodd, the man determined to put a permanent end to Bobby and his crew’s crooked ways.

DirecTV will broadcast all seven produced episodes of Smith, not just the three that CBS aired in September and October of 2006 before yanking the show entirely. So, if you subscribe to the service, make sure to check the series out over the next couple of months. I’ll be following along as the episodes air, providing commentary after each one premieres on the network.

Smith will air Wednesdays on DirecTV’s 101 Network and DirecTV on DEMAND at 10pm ET

  1. This is some of the best TV short series I’ve encountered yet. Virginia Madsen is intriguing….Ray Liotta is always great, Simon Baker is soooo believable. How can it be it did not do well in Canada?? There is such abundant trash available and something like this…..doesn’t do well??? I can’t wait to see it in it’s entirety, since I only got in on the last 4 episodes…..tell me when it will be available again!!!
