‘Smallville’ Sounds the Death Knell for Clark, Lana, Lex, or Chloe
Fans Face the Exit of a Major Character and Longtime Cast Member
The latest buzz on the television entertainment beat, courtesy of E! TV diva Kristin Veitch, is that one of the four main characters on Smallville—Clark Kent (Tom Welling), Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), or Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack)—is heading to a grave at the local cemetery after a surprise twist kills him or her off before season’s end. Just to get our juices bubbling without actually revealing who’s about to get the fatal heave-ho, Veitch clarifies that the character is “someone who is most definitely a fan favorite … I think you’re gonna freak.”
Now those two clues, the fact that the person is a fan favorite and that their death will make fans freak, go a long way towards pinpointing the identity of the future departed. Lex a fan favorite? Conventional wisdom would say no since he is the show’s Number 1 villain and the future Superman’s archenemy. Even so, the series definitely would not be the same without his bad bald presence. That makes the junior Luthor indeed at least immensely appreciated among fans who not only enjoy Smallville‘s constant classic battle between good and evil, but also the firsthand glimpse it offers into how a person slowly (d)evolves from an outwardly tough but inwardly needy individual who truly wants to just be loved to someone who makes himself unlovable through his every action.
There’s no doubt whatsoever that both Lana and Chloe are fan favorites, as well. Those who think Lana is on the outs point out that everyone knows she and Clark are not meant to end up together anyway in the traditional Superman saga because Chloe’s cousin Lois Lane is the hunk’s future hottie. In the other corner, we have the popular opinion that Chloe shall get the boot since the February 15 “Freak” and this week’s first new post-hiatus episode “Progeny” both clearly indicate that Chloe is more likely than not a member of the show’s long line of kryptonite-infected freaks. (Get it? Veitch said “I think you’re gonna freak.”)
Leaving the best and most obvious for last: It ain’t gonna be Clark because he’s the show star … unless, of course, in dependable, gimmicky TV fashion, he comes back from the dead soon after his demise in an amazing feat of superheroic wonder. That seems so tacky and overdone, though, I genuinely hope the show isn’t going there.
My money’s on Lex for one simple reason—in a February interview with Veitch, Rosenbaum indicated that he will not be remaining with the series for the long haul. Add the observation that Lex has become increasingly pitiful and self-destructive this season, and the reported impending death sounds like a great way for him to leave early with a sizable bang while also helping the CW achieve a significant ratings boost.
If, heaven forbid, the character turns out to be Chloe instead, at least she’s going out in style, starting with this Thursday’s episode “Progeny”, in which the legendary superheroine Wonder Woman herself—also known as Lynda Carter—turns up as her estranged mother Moira Sullivan.
