‘Smallville’ Snags Its Supergirl

Virtual Unknown Lands a Super Gig

Laura Vandervoort Exactly one month ago, Smallville co-creator and executive producer Al Gough revealed that a genuine Kryptonian relative of Clark Kent’s (Tom Welling) would arrive in the homey Kansas town next season. Well, the role of that family member—a cousin better known to comic-book fans as Supergirl—has been cast, just in time for the annual four-day Comic-Con convention beginning two weeks from now in San Diego on July 26. If you watch CTV in Canada or the basic-cable network The N in the United States, then you might already be familiar with 22-year-old Toronto-based actress Laura Vandervoort, who stars in the popular teen series Instant Star as Sadie. If you still have no idea who Vandervoort is, rest assured that you will just as soon as Smallville‘s seventh season gets underway.

People magazine reports that the lucky actress received the news Wednesday night and will begin filming in Vancouver next week. Explaining how Vandervoort won the role over hundreds of other actresses, Gough stated “She’s a combination of beauty, intelligence, a certain warmth, and great attitude.” He further promises that her character Kara, who was born on the faraway planet Krypton and will eventually find herself in a romance with human Daily Planet staffer and former Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) squeeze Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore), “may be Clark Kent’s cousin, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to be the obedient one.”

I say, who cares if she’s a good girl or not? Girlfriend can actually fly, and that’s all that matters in my book.
