Sibling Act in ‘Damages’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’

Brother and Sister Central Players in Two High-Profile Basic-Cable Series

Anastasia Griffith/Jamie Bamber After last week’s “Jesus, Mary and Joe Cocker” installment of Damages, FX’s roundly touted new original legal thriller helmed by Glenn Close, the character I’ve started finding most intriguing is no longer young attorney Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) but rather her fiancé’s sister Katie Connor. As played by little-known actress Anastasia Griffith, the chef and aspiring restaurateur is quickly showing herself to be one tough woman who is, unfortunately, playing right into the hands of just about everyone around.

In the pilot episode, we learned that Katie is the key witness in attorney Patty Hewes’ (Close) practically derailed class-action lawsuit against obnoxious businessman Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson). Last week, we further discovered that, initially honest and earnest appearances aside, Katie is actually a cunning little liar, too. Why is the question that I most want an answer to now, and, hopefully, viewers will get at least a partial explanation tonight.

My fellow science-fiction fans who have also been following the FX series might be unaware of just how tasty its cast is, for Griffith is none other than the younger and only sister of Day-One Battlestar Galactica regular Jamie Bamber. He, of course, plays Captain Lee “Apollo” Adama in the Sci Fi Channel staple. Bamber is a Griffith, as well, but uses their mother’s maiden name as his stage surname; thus, the surface non-relatedness. Because of this family tie, I’ve watched Griffith’s performance in Damages extra closely since she first appeared onscreen, and I’m happy to report that her work is consistently topnotch.

If you’ve abstained from Damages thus far and still aren’t convinced it’s worth the time, check out the clip below, which lays out the series’ basic premise. Or you can jump to the video if the player isn’t visible.*
