‘Secret Talents of the Stars’ Is Over
And I Didn’t Even Know It Was On!
When you’re a TV writer (or blogger, as it were), here’s how you know you’ve been away from the tube too long — a new show premieres, tanks, and gets canceled, all before you realized it ever came on.
Apparently, Secret Talents of the Stars is a talent show-type reality series from CBS that featured “well-known personalities” revealing their titular secret talents. The premiere episode has performances from country music artist Clint Black, professional ice skater Sasha Cohen, urban music artist and actress Mýa, and Star Trek sci-fi icon George Takei.
According to the network description, Black did a standup comedy routine, Cohen morphed into a contortionist, Mýa hoofed it as a tap dancer, and Takei gave his vocal cords a country-music workout. I have no problem admitting that I wouldn’t have the slightest desire to see any of that if given another chance (but if you would, keep reading).
Citizens all across America must agree, too, as proven by the cellar-level ratings the show received when it debuted Tuesday night. I wonder who thought the disaster sounded like something people would want to watch because it sounds to me like taking the whole reality-TV wave a bit too far.
If you’re going to promise “stars” and secret talents, then up the ante. Get big names, like Will Smith and Julia Roberts, for instance. Considering that that’s unrealistic — oh, who am I kidding? — impossible, though, at least let’s see Clint Black tackle opera as a soprano or Sasha Cohen hug the pole as an “exotic” dancer. At least guys would have tuned in for the second act.

I did check out Cohen demonstrating how bendy she is — it was the first performance — which isn’t that big a deal since she’s a former gymnast, for goodness sakes.
