SECTIONS: Monk, Psych

Season Premieres: Partners in Crime ‘Monk’ and ‘Psych’

Super Special Guest Stars Help Start Things Off Right

Monk The one-two comedic punch of oddball detectives Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) and Shawn Spencer (James Roday) resumes tonight in its customary Friday-night home on basic-cable’s USA network. Monk, as usual, gets first dibs on the viewing audience at 9pm EST, beginning its sixth season with special guest star Sarah Silverman in the episode “Mr. Monk and His Biggest Fan.” That fan is, of course, the ultra popular and funny comic Silverman of her very own Comedy Central hit The Sarah Silverman Program, who plays Marci Maven, a stalker-ish admirer of our OCD-afflicted master sleuth. When her pooch bites the dust, Maven smells murder in the air and hunts down a typically reluctant—and some might say equally strange—Monk to get to the bottom of her doggie’s death.

The regular cast members of Monk include Traylor Howard as Natalie Teeger, Ted Levine as Leland Stottlemeyer, and Jason Gray-Stanford as Randall Disher.

Psych Then, at 10pm, we move from sunny San Francisco to no less sunny Santa Barbara, the setting for Psych. In the second-season premiere “American Duos,” pseudo psychic Shawn and his best bud Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill) go undercover at an American Idol-esque talent show that comes complete with a panel of all too familiar personality-challenged judges. The requisite bigmouthed Brit—played by none other than The Rocky Horror Picture Show‘s Dr. Frank N. Furter, probably better known to most by now as the English actor Tim Curry—enlists the assistance of the series’ resident dynamic detecting duo when someone unsuccessfully attempts to kill him over and over again.

Psych also stars Corbin Bernsen as Henry Spencer, Tim Omundson as Carlton Lassiter, Maggie Lawson as Juliet O’Hara, and Kirsten Nelson as Karen Vick.

Monk and Psych air Fridays on USA at 9pm and 10pm EST respectively
