SCI FI Digital Press Tour: Stargate Atlantis

IESB.net Gets the Goods Behind the Scenes

Stargate Atlantis One of my biggest and longest lasting regrets from this summer will no doubt be my inability to accept the personal invitation I received to attend SCI FI Channel‘s first ever Digital Press Tour in Vancouver, Canada, last week. If you haven’t yet heard about this groundbreaking event, it was an unprecedented chance presented to online journalists (aka bloggers to most), enabling them to attend various exclusive interviews, panel discussions, behind-the-scenes set tours, and sneak peak presentations from June 25 to 27. Attendees were provided access to a number of well-known sci-fi shows that air or will air on the basic-cable network, including Battlestar Galactica, Eureka (how I would have loved to have been in the same room with Salli Richardson!), Flash Gordon, and Stargate Atlantis. Since I couldn’t participate and report from my own experiences, I’ve decided to point interested readers in the appropriate directions to learn more about what happened during this generous opportunity hosted by the SCI FI Channel.

First up is the Web site IESB.net with its amazingly comprehensive coverage of the Stargate Atlantis portion of the Digital Press Tour. According to the reporter Stephanie Sanchez, participants visited the set of this three-year-old Sci Fi Channel staple second. The series now stands as the only surviving spinoff of the original 1994 Stargate movie, following the cancellation and recent end of Stargate: SG-1. Fans of the earlier series likely already know that veteran Amanda Tapping will join Atlantis starting next season, as well as Firefly and Serenity alum Jewel Staite. Both actresses are reprising previously established roles, with Tapping playing her SG-1 character Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter and Staite resuming her portrayal of Dr. Jennifer Keller.

Among the highlights at IESB.net regarding the Stargate Atlantis stop on the Digital Press Tour are numerous detailed and interesting photos featuring cast, crew, tour participants, and the sets, in addition to video footage of an entire panel discussion with cast members David Hewlett (Dr. Rodney McKay) and Rachel Luttrell (Teyla Emmagan, pregnant in both the recent third season and real life) and executive producers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. IESB.net’s reporting is a must for fans of the series and science-fiction television in general.
