To the overstuffed and woozy delight of two networks and its fans, first-run episodes of several popular series outperformed a cadre of movies on Turkey Day. ABC and CBS both dared to go with original installments, and both received solid ratings in return.

The Alphabet Network even gave The Eye a strong run for its money, especially among viewers aged 18 to 49. When the Nielsen Fast National numbers were all tallied for total viewers and the 18–49 demographic, however, CBS achieved a Thursday-night double win for the third time in a row this Sweeps.

8pm: A Survivor: China clips show (11.65 million viewers, 3.7 rating/12 share) started the night off strong for CBS, while a new Ugly Betty (7.53m, 2.2/7) on ABC pulled in a respectable audience, too. NBC’s film choice The Incredibles (6.81m, 2.4/8) was third in total viewers but second in the 18–49 demographic, followed by Dodgeball (4.1m, 1.4/4) on Fox at fourth, and Raise Your Voice (1.18m, 0.4/1) on The CW at fifth. The three movies maintained the same hierarchy during the next hour, as well.

9pm: Although CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (14.62m, 4.2/12) led at 9pm in total viewers as usual, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy (5.1/14) did the same among adults aged 18 to 49, as is also customary. The Incredibles (7.1m, 2.5/7) on NBC, Dodgeball (4.21m, 1.7/5) on Fox, and Raise Your Voice (1.06m, 0.4/1) on The CW held steady in the rear.

10pm: Thanks to the second-season premiere of uninteresting October Road (6.37m, 2.3/7), ABC dropped all the way to last place in the 18–49 demographic at 10pm. Worse, the sophomore drama lost 6.5 million viewers from its 9pm lead-in Grey’s Anatomy, and it dropped another 2 million watchers in its second half-hour. Yikes!

CBS’ Without a Trace (12.13m, 3.1/9) won the hour, with the final 30 minutes of The Incredibles (8.35m, 3.1/9) on NBC coming in at second. At 10:30, a repeat of The Office (4.6m, 2.0/6) dropped NBC to third behind October Road in total viewers; yet, the sitcom maintained second position among 18–49-year-olds.

Overall: CBS prevailed, scoring 12.8 million total viewers and a 3.6/11. ABC (9.27m, 3.1/9) was second, NBC (6.8m, 2.5/7) third, Fox (4.12m, 1.5/5) fourth, and The CW (1.12, 0.4/1) fifth.

DATA EXPLANATION: In the households figure 6.4/11, 6.4 is the household RATING that indicates what average percentage of U.S. households tuned into a particular show (6.4%), while 11 is the household SHARE that refers to what average percentage of televisions in use were tuned into a particular show (11%).
