ABC Outfoxes Fox in Total Viewers

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

Blame it on the Dancing and Peanuts, both of which helped ABC break Fox’s Tuesday-night stranglehold on total viewers and those aged 18 to 49. As a result of its strong showing with the results show for ultra popular Dancing with the Stars and a one-hour broadcast of two classic Charlie Brown episodes, not to mention a Bachelor special, the Alphabet Network scored the most overall viewers on Tuesday, while Fox had to settle for just a 18–49 win.

8pm: Before ABC and Fox could get an edge, however, CBS’ NCIS began the night as top dog, pulling in an audience of 17.38 million viewers and achieving a 3.7 rating/11 share among 18–49-year-olds. The rest of the hour was rounded out by the ABC/Peanuts combo A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (9.96m, 3.3/10) and He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown (10.44m, 3.5/9) at second, Fox’s Bones (8.74m, 3.0/9) at third, the first hour of NBC’s The Biggest Loser (7.22m, 2.8/8) at fourth, and The CW’s Beauty and the Geek (2.56m, 1.3/4) at fifth.

9pm: ABC pulled decisively ahead at 9pm as soon as Dancing with the Stars‘ opening shots rolled (20.74m, 4.9/12). Fox’s House bested the reality show in the 18–49 demographic (6.8/17), though, and ranked second for total viewers (16.81m) in the hour. The final installment of NBC’s The Biggest Loser (7.87m, 3.4/8) came in third, and a repeat of rookie Reaper (1.77m, 0.8/2) on The CW was last.

10pm: ABC also managed to outperform the customary 10pm, Tuesday-night winner, relegating NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (11.66m, 3.9/11) to second place while 12.76 million viewers (4.2/11) watched The Bachelor post-season special instead. CBS’ new family serial Cane (7.64m, 2.0/5) pulled up the rear at third.

Overall: First place was split between ABC (14.57 million total viewers) and Fox (4.9/13 for adults aged 18 to 49). ABC (4.1/11) was second in the 18–49 demographic, with NBC (3.4/9), CBS (2.9/8), and The CW (1.0/3) trailing behind. In terms of total viewers, Fox (12.77m) placed second, CBS (11.9m) third, NBC (8.92) a distant fourth, and The CW (2.16m) a typical last.

DATA EXPLANATION: In the households figure 6.4/11, 6.4 is the household RATING that indicates what average percentage of U.S. households tuned into a particular show (6.4%), while 11 is the household SHARE that refers to what average percentage of televisions in use were tuned into a particular show (11%).
