8pm: CBS began the night in first place in total viewers with a repeat of Without a Trace (6.63m, 1.4/5), although Fox’s reliable hit Cops (6.5m, 2.4/8) took the 18–49 demographic and was a strong second in overall audience size. NCAA College Football on ABC (4.34m, 1.4/5) placed third, ahead of a flailing Bionic Woman repeat (3.27m, 0.8/3) on NBC.

9pm: Another crime procedural repeat, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, performed well for CBS in the next hour (7.93m, 1.8/6), while another long-running crime reality series, America’s Most Wanted, did the same for Fox (6.24m, 2.1/7). Also once again, ABC’s football coverage (4.5m, 1.5/4) came in third, and a repeat of Chuck on NBC (3.11m, 1.0/3) kept The Peacock at fourth.

10pm: With Fox signed off on original programming for the night, CBS pulled to the front decisively with its newsmagazine 48 Hours Mystery (7.25m, 2.1/6). A repeat of the popular Law & Order spinoff Special Victims Unit (5.77m, 1.6/5) helped NBC swerve into second place, besting the third hour of football on ABC (4.69m, 1.6/5).

Overall: As previously mentioned, CBS (7.32m, 1.7/5) finished ahead of all the others networks in total viewers, but second behind Fox (6.35m, 2.2/7) for those aged 18 to 49. ABC (4.51m, 1.5/5) was third in both areas, while NBC (4.05m, 1.1/4) was a fairly close fourth.

DATA EXPLANATION: In the households figure 6.4/11, 6.4 is the household RATING that indicates what average percentage of U.S. households tuned into a particular show (6.4%), while 11 is the household SHARE that refers to what average percentage of televisions in use were tuned into a particular show (11%).
