Fox Prevails, As Usual

House

Thanks to the consistent popularity of the sour-doc drama House, Tuesday was another (predictable) win for Fox in both total viewers and those aged 18 to 49. Although NBC was a paltry fourth in overall audience size, the Peacock Network placed a sound second in the 18–49 demographic, earning a 3.7 rating and 10 share as compared to Fox’s 5.2/13.

8pm: The night began with CBS’ military crime procedural NCIS in first place, with 17.43 million viewers and a 3.7/10. Fox’s forensic procedural Bones was a distant second in overall viewers (9.11m) but a close runner-up in the 18–49 demo (3.4/9). The bottom three included the first of two episodes of NBC’s weight-loss reality series The Biggest Loser at third (7.92m, 3.2/9), ABC’s mediocre comedy combo Cavemen and Carpoolers at fourth (4.61m, 1.6/5 and 5.15, 1.9/5, respectively), and The CW’s Beauty and the Geek last (2.43, 1.2/3).

9pm: As expected, in the next hour, the results show for ABC’s hit celebrity dance competition Dancing with the Stars pulled to the front, attracting an audience of 17.46 million viewers and achieving a 4.1/10. Yet, more impressive on the 18–49 measure was the second place finisher House. The Fox series posted a night high 7.0/17, in addition to its 16.9 million viewers. At third, CBS’ military drama The Unit pulled in 11.03 million viewers and a 2.9/7. The second hour of NBC’s The Biggest Loser followed (8.4m, 3.7/9), and The CW’s Reaper was fifth (2.42, 1.2/3).

10pm: Another changeup occurred in the last hour, when NBC’s police procedural Law & Order: Special Victims Unit led with 12.49 million viewers and a 4.4/12. ABC’s Boston Legal was close behind (11.76, 2.9/8), while the freshman CBS family serial Cane was third (7.29, 1.8/5).

Overall: Fox won decisively on both critical measures (13m, 5.2/13), with NBC at second (3.7/10), ABC third (2.9/8), CBS fourth (2.8/7), and The CW fifth (1.2/3) for viewers aged 18 to 49. In total viewers, CBS was second (11.92m), followed by ABC at third (11.37m), NBC at fourth (9.6m), and The CW still last (2.42m).

DATA EXPLANATION: In the households figure 6.4/11, 6.4 is the household RATING that indicates what average percentage of U.S. households tuned into a particular show (6.4%), while 11 is the household SHARE that refers to what average percentage of televisions in use were tuned into a particular show (11%).
