November 2007 Sweeps – Day 6: ‘Reaper’ Goes ‘Buffy’

CBS’ Ratings Spell Is Broken—Maybe

Samantha Who?

Nielsen’s Fast National numbers have been delayed all day, but there are figures available for total viewers in all but a handful of markets. As a result, take the following breakdown with even more caution than normal. Everything (but The CW’s last-place numbers, that is) may change in a flash as soon as the complete figures are dispersed.

8pm: Reliable Dancing with the Stars (13.4/20) helped give ABC an anticipated win for the night in total viewers. Monday’s episode was an extended 105 minutes instead of the previous 90 minutes, followed by a later Samantha Who?. In second place with less than half of ABC’s total was CBS’ paired sitcoms How I Met Your Mother (6.0/9) and The Big Bang Theory (6.2/9). The duo was trailed by NBC’s rookie Chuck and the first hour of Fox’s two-episode Prison Break, both of which drew a 4.7/7. The CW’s Everybody Hates Chris (2.4/4) and Aliens in America (1.8/3) rounded out the hour.

9pm: At 9pm, ABC continued its juggernaut pace, maintaining a slightly higher 13.8/9 for the last 45 minutes of Dancing, which dropped to a 9.0/13 for the first 15 minutes of Samantha. CBS came second once again with the comedy match-up of Two and a Half Men (9.1/13) and Rules of Engagement (7.2/10). NBC’s Heroes was next in line (6.2/9), with Fox’s final Prison Break installment (4.8/7) and The CW’s Girlfriends (2.4/3) and The Game (2.6/4) nipping at its heels.

10pm: The closing hour of the primetime period signaled a predictable shift in dominance from ABC to CBS with the broadcast of a new CSI: Miami (10.6/17). The last 15 minutes of Samantha Who? (8.0/12) and the shortened Bachelor episode (6.0/10) held ABC at second, while NBC placed third, with Journeyman managing only a 3.8/6, its lowest numbers to date.

Overall: ABC led the night with a 10.8/16, followed by CBS (8.3/12) at second, NBC (4.9/7) at a distant third, Fox (4.7/7) a close fourth, and The CW (2.3/3) dead last.

UPDATE: The overnight numbers are finally in, and the results for viewers aged 18–49 are predictable, based on the information already posted. ABC placed first on Monday night with a 4.7/11, and CBS was within spitting distance at second with a 4.1/10. The bottom three included a tied Fox and NBC with 3.4/8 each, and The CW left out in the brutal cold as always with a barely relevant 0.9/2. The one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that NBC’s Journeyman (3.4/6) and The CW’s Aliens in America (1.2/2) are the night’s biggest losers, something that I find odd given the overall quality of both shows.
