November 2007 Sweeps – Day 12: The CW Gets Musical

Those Desperate Housewives Do ABC Good

Desperate Housewives

What?! CBS came in third?! That’s right people, the most winning-est network thus far this Sweeps period came in at a boring, middling third on Sunday. In its normal spot, thanks ever so much to soapy dramedy Desperate Housewives, was ABC, which won the night in overall viewers and tied with Fox and NBC (yep, that’s what I said) for the devotion of those aged 18 to 49 years. Fox was a respectable fourth in total audience size, while The CW was so far behind, it’s actually embarrassing (1.27 million viewers to Fox’s 10.7—Yikes!).

8pm: ABC’s reality series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition flew out the gates, gaining 15.09 million viewers (5.3/13). It was closely trailed by NBC’s Sunday Night Football (14.43, 5.6/13). Fox’s cartoon combo of The Simpsons (10.57, 5.1/13) and King of the Hill (7.28, 3.7/9) and CBS’ The Amazing Race (10.48, 3.1/8) nearly tied, at least in total viewers. And, The CW rookie Life is Wild (1.35, 0.4/1) registered little more than a blip.

9pm: Desperate Housewives was the night’s most-watched program on both measures, winning 18.54 million viewers and a 7.2 rating/16 share. NBC’s football continued its strong showing, followed by CBS’ dependable crime procedural Cold Case (12.91, 3.0/7), Fox’s animated pair Family Guy (10.42, 5.4/12) and American Dad (7.93, 4.0/9), and The CW’s repeat of Americas Next Top Model (1.45, 0.6/1), which actually did better than the fresh installment of Life is Wild at 8pm.

10pm: NBC stayed steady, as did ABC’s Brothers & Sisters (12.53, 5.0/13) and CBS’s Shark (11.46, 2.6/7).

Overall: The Alphabet Network was the all around winner (13.21, 4.9/12). NBC was second in total viewers (12.64m), but tied ABC and Fox for the 18–49 demographic (4.9/12). CBS lagged behind at third on both counts (11.96, 2.8/7), just ahead of Fox’s total showing (11.96, 2.8/7) and way ahead of The CW’s (1.27m, 0.5/1).
