November 2007 Sweeps – Day 11: Larry David Goes Batty on Finale
The 700th Cops Rocks
Is it really a shock that Cops, one of television’s original and most successful reality series, rated highest in viewers aged 18 to 49 on Saturday night when it premiered its impressive 700th episode? Not even a little. Its even longer running follow-up, America’s Most Wanted, tied it for first among viewers in the magical 18–49 demographic, giving Fox an easy win for the night on that measure.
8pm: Cops got Fox off to an immediate good start, attracting 6.34 million viewers to its 700th installment and achieving a night-high 2.2 rating and 7 share for 18–49-year-old watchers. A repeat of CBS’ CSI: Miami was next in overall viewers (6.05m), but third on the 18–49 measure (1.2/4). ABC’s Saturday Night Football telecast was third in overall viewers (5.41m), yet a nice second for the 18–49 demo (1.9/6), while NBC’s repeat of the rapidly fading rookie Bionic Woman was predictably last on both counts (3.41m, 0.8/3).
9pm: A repeat of Criminal Minds picked up the pace for the Eye Network in the next hour. It lured 6.96 million viewers (1.6/5). The second program in Fox’s reliable, hard-hitting Saturday-night reality lineup, America’s Most Wanted, attracted more viewers aged 18 to 49 (2.2/7), but slightly fewer overall (6.29). A repeat of NBC’s lovable Chuck finished the hour at fourth (3.17m, 0.9/3), behind ABC’s football game.
10pm: With Fox gone to news and local programming, CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery managed to satisfy the true-crime needs of TV watchers, winning over 7.49 million (1.8/7) to make it the night’s highest-rated show in overall viewers. A repeat of NBC’s hit Law & Order: Special Victims Unit also performed well (5.36m, 1.5/5), enabling it to become the network’s best-rated series of the repeat-filled night.
Overall: Although Fox clearly dominated when it came to the coveted 18–49 demographic (2.2/7), CBS placed first in overall audience (6.83m) on the strength of its repeats and its popular newsmagazine at 10pm. Fox was a close second with 6.31 million viewers, followed by ABC at fourth (5.41m) and NBC lagging behind at fifth (3.98m). ABC was second to Fox for 18–49-year-olds (1.9/6), with CBS (1.5/5) and NBC (1.0/3) filling the bottom two spots.
