NCIS Celebrates Its 100th Episode

Hit JAG Spinoff Following in Its Predecessor’s Footsteps

NCIS at 100 CBS’ NCIS has a birthday of sorts coming up tonight when the military crime drama premieres its milestone 100th episode. Although I was a regular viewer during the series’ first three seasons, I slacked off in the fourth after other newer shows caught my attention and pulled me away. Still, I’ve always regretted losing track of one of the better procedurals currently on TV.

NCIS enjoyed steadily increasing popularity throughout its first four seasons, and it began its fifth in September sans creator and executive producer Donald Bellisario. The showrunner’s exit last May was allegedly due in large part to interpersonal issues between him and series star Mark Harmon. His departure clearly hasn’t caused a drag in the ratings, though, since NCIS is currently seventh among this season’s top shows. During its run thus far, the show has also consistently placed in the annual Top 30, with a “low” of 26 its rookie season.

Tonight’s “Chimera” episode takes its cue from the spooky Halloween season when Team Gibbs encounters a ghost ship. Okay, maybe not “ghost ship” in the traditional, horror-story sense. While investigating a death aboard one of the Navy’s top-secret ships, the lives of Gibbs & Company are endangered when they find the ship’s been abandoned.

Of special note is guest star Steven Culp (Desperate Housewives, Traveler), a former recurring cast member on JAG, the ten-season military legal procedural that spawned NCIS in 2003 with a two-part backdoor pilot. Culp played CIA Special Agent Clayton Webb back then. He assumes a different identity on “Chimera,” however, as Navy Commander William Skinner (which gives me an immediate and seasonally appropriate X-Files flash—maybe the name’s effect was intended).

NCIS currently airs Tuesdays on CBS at 8pm EST
