Crime Drama Mondays Return
Crime drama fans can get more than their fill of procedurals on Mondays this summer when TNT launches its new Monday-night lineup tonight, June 10. The two-hour block consists of hit returning Closer spinoff Major Crimes at 9pm ET, followed by rookie King & Maxwell at 10pm. The newcomer is lucky to have such a popular lead-in from the same genre.
My Name Is Earl veteran Nadine Velazquez joins the regular cast of Major Crimes during its second-season premiere “Final Cut.” She plays Deputy District Attorney Emma Rios, a potential very painful thorn in Captain Sharon Raydor’s (Mary McDonnell) side when she questions Raydor’s relationship with homeless teenager Rusty (Graham Patrick Martin). Can the captain handle this distraction while also helping her team figure out who murdered a prominent movie director? History says she can.
McDonnell’s fellow The Closer alum Jon Tenney headlines the new TNT crime procedural King & Maxwell alongside costar Rebecca Romijn (Eastwick, Ugly Betty). More of a dramedy than a drama, the series is based on well-known characters featured in novels by author David Baldacci.
The pair play former Secret Service Agents Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, now private investigators who work together. Additional King & Maxwell cast members include Chris Butler (The Good Wife) and Michael O’Keefe (Roseanne) as FBI agents who know King and Maxwell and disapprove of their strategies, and Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as imprisoned autistic savant and suspected serial killer Edgar Roy, who eventually assists the team with the case introduced in the series premiere.
Season One of King & Maxwell contains 10 episodes scheduled to air this summer. Major Crimes received a 19-episode Season Two pickup, however, which means eight of them will comprise a second half-season airing later during the 2013–2014 season.
