Grey’s Anatomy: What to Expect in Season Four

The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same

Grey's Anatomy As the fourth season of ABC’s successful but not invulnerable medical drama Grey’s Anatomy gets underway next season, viewers can expect to see both popular and unpopular story lines continue. If you don’t want to learn about any plot points in advance of the fall premiere, however, then I respectfully suggest surfing away right now before you get to the ugly spoilers ahead.

Of course, everyone knows OB-GYN and neonatal surgeon Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) is off to La La Land to helm her own spinoff series called Private Practice. As everyone also knows, cardiothoracic surgeon extraordinaire Dr. Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) is off to NBC to ply his trade on the Bionic Woman … Just kidding—we know that Washington got canned for making homophobic remarks in reference to his former colleague and current Emmy nominee T.R. Knight.

According to the New York Post, the first two episodes of the fourth season, which have already been filmed and completed, will find George O’Malley (Knight), his wife Callie (Sara Ramirez), and his too-best friend Isobel “Izzie” Stevens (Emmy nominee Katherine Heigl) still circling each other in that icky love-triangle subplot fans hated so much last season, with good cause.

Meanwhile, when we’re not busy trying to curb that nauseating feeling each time George and Izzie look longingly into each other’s eyes again like incestuous siblings, we can rejoice at the early return from retirement of our favorite chief of surgery, Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.), as well as the return of Cristina Yang (Emmy nominee Sandra Oh) from her ill-fated honeymoon, which she instead went on with still annoying (I’m sure) Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).

Aside from the old familiar characters, the fourth season will also focus on a new set of interns slaving away under Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), Christina, Izzie, and Meredith, but not George, of course, who failed the all-important intern exam at the end of Season Three. The newbies include recently announced series regular Chyler Leigh (The Practice, Reunion) as Meredith’s half-sister Lexie Grey, in addition to two more interns who’ll make their debut in the fourth-season premiere amidst the chaos of a multi-vehicle accident.
