FX Fans Served Second Seasons of ‘Dirt’ and ‘The Riches’
Yet Its Sister Network Fox Cancels Drive?!
That’s the wacky world of television for ya. After yesterday’s sad bad news that Fox has kicked its new road-race drama Drive to the curb after a measly three airings, there’s better news for viewers of its basic-cable sister network FX. Over on that end of the dial, where executives seem willing to take more risks with programming while behaving less obsessed with gargantuan ratings, two ambitious rookie series will likely receive renewals for a sophomore season, according to a recent Mediaweek article.
Both the gossip-rag drama Dirt, starring Friends alumna Courteney Cox, and the thieving false-identity dramedy The Riches, featuring British thespians Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver, will come back to the tube to entertain their relatively small—at least by broadcast network standards—cadre of devotees as members of FX’s current stable of six original dramas. Fans should count their lucky stars that neither show was cursed enough to wind up down the dial on Fox, where they most certainly would not only have been canceled, but probably wouldn’t have even had the chance to air more than a few episodes. What a difference basic cable makes in TV land these days.
