Friday-Night Must-See: Stargate Atlantis

“The Kindred” Concludes

How about that Stargate Atlantis, huh? On last week’s “The Kindred, Part 1,” longtime fans witnessed the return of not just one, but two prominent characters from the past: beloved Dr. Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion) and his despised Wraith-Human hybrid creation Michael Kenmore (Connor Trinneer).

When Scottish chief medical doctor Carson Beckett was killed in the third-season episode “Sunday,” viewers were understandably upset to see one of the series’ most popular characters go.

It should be very interesting, then, to learn what kind of background will be presented to clarify how a man presumed dead by all is suddenly found alive on a foreign world’s base, where he was being held prisoner under the watchful eye of numerous armed guards. Since the discovery occurs at the very end of the first installment of “The Kindred,” there’s lots of explaining in store tonight.

Michael Kenmore, on the other hand, appears near the middle of Part 1, when Teyla is scooped up by a dart’s cull beam while she’s investigating the whereabouts of Kanaan, her unborn child’s father, as well as her disappeared people, the Athosians.

Clearly still stuck on his eerie connection to Teyla as a result of the Wraith gene she possesses, Michael seems preoccupied with the well-being of her offspring. At one point he even admits to having — cue ominous music here — “great plans for him.”

Teyla has just cause for concern, too, because somehow Michael has managed to indoctrinate Kanaan, who, in another standout weird scene, also appears convinced that their child will serve a significant role in Michael’s fight to obtain control of the galaxy.

Uhm, yeah… We’ll see about that because I’m sure the final part of “The Kindred” will find the Atlantis crew with a great deal to say about such an ambitious, egomaniacal goal.

As an added bonus, Sci Fi Channel will replay Part 1 of “The Kindred” tonight at 9pm EST, immediately preceding the premiere of Part 2. Moreover, don’t forget that next Friday, March 7, marks the fourth-season finale, “The Last Man.”

Stargate Atlantis currently airs Fridays on the Sci Fi Channel at 10pm EST

  1. Woo-hoo!

Looking forward to watching Kindred 2 tonight and finding out why Carson is alive — or not dead!

  2. Thanks and you’re welcome, Morjana. I hope you enjoyed the second part of “The Kindred” as much as I did.

It’s great the way they left it open for Carson Beckett to return again in the future, just like Elizabeth Weir. Maybe they’ll both be back next season for more than just a few episodes (don’t I wish!).
