Doctor Who: Another Prime Sci-Fi Series to Bite the Dust

First the US’ Battlestar Galactica, Now the UK’s Quirky Classic

Doctor Who Boo hoo! According to news coming out of the United Kingdom, it seems that the revival of the long-running sci-fi television series that has tweaked the imaginations of millions is set to call it quits next summer after just four seasons. Doctor Who, the record-breaking production that introduced a modern version overseas in March 2005 following an original run that occupied the airwaves from 1963 until 1989 (not including the 1993 special and the 1996 movie) is heading into its final days. The culprit is reportedly a “heavy workload – nine months of 16-hour days every year – [that] has started to take its toll.” Executive producer Russell T. Davies, who helmed the relaunch of the series, is said to be responsible for the decision to discontinue the program while it’s still at the top of the ratings heap.

The current doctor is played by David Tennant, who stepped into the role after a highly successful one-season premiere run by respected actor Christopher Eccleston. Eccleston, of course, is recently most notable in the United States for bringing invisible man Claude Raines to life in NBC’s breakout hit Heroes earlier this year.
