Danny Glover and Sally Field Partnered in ‘Brothers and Sisters’

Am I the Only One Not Feeling This Coupling?

Danny Glover Trust me—this has nothing to do with age or race or anything other than a complete and utter inability to imagine 61-year-old film veterans Danny Glover and Sally Field getting the hots for each other under any circumstances whatsoever, including those hypothetical last-man/woman on Earth scenarios. When I learned the latest casting news that 6′3½” Lethal Weapon star Glover has been tapped to play a love interest for 5′2½” former Flying Nun Field in ABC’s Brothers & Sisters, my first instinctive reaction was to laugh … out loud … complete with tears.

I’m just not seeing it, which, of course, means that I now have no choice this fall but to watch my second episode ever of the popular Sunday-night drama (the first one was to write my middling review, in case you wondered) as soon as Glover arrives. If Dally (or does Sanny sound better?) manage to generate any kind of authentic heat together on the small screen, I guess I’ll have to eat my words then—provided that I can uncover my eyes long enough to actually look, that is.

Field plays Nora Walker in the sophomore ensemble series, a strong-willed recent widow and the matriarch of a California clan that includes her five adult children. In addition to serving as Nora’s next paramour, Glover’s 8–10-episode character will be a political campaign manager who is “extremely smart and charming, but also a political shark.”

Incidentally, both Field and Glover starred in the 1984 tearjerker Places in the Heart, which I have never seen even a second of in my life. Apparently, it was quality film fare since Field scored a Best Actress Academy Award, while the movie also garnered nominations for best supporting actor (John Malkovich) and actress (Lindsay Crouse), best director (Robert Benton), and best picture. If Field and Glover got busy in it, though, I cannot say (and don’t really wanna know).
