Dancing with the Stars: Results Show 1
The Results Are In for the First Elimination Round
The first bloated results show of Dancing with the Stars‘ fourth season opened with a very welcomed encore of Laila Ali and Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s smoking Mambo from Monday night, the best performance by far of the second week. After that auspicious beginning, viewers were treated to a hodgepodge of filler, some brain-numbing, including two dance-accompanied songs sung by five-time Grammy winner Dionne Warwick (also known as troubled Whitney Houston’s older cousin), a sorta funny skit with late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel providing instructions on how *not* to dance the “torrid” Tango, and an informative clip montage of the three celebrities given the boot in the first elimination round during the series’ initial three seasons: Reality show participant Trista Rehn Sutter, ESPN sports anchor Kenny Mayne, and MSNBC news anchor Tucker Carlson. Clearly, the news guys are none too popular among dance aficionados.
That lack of fan support unfortunately extended to former supermodel Paulina Porizkova (also known as the longtime wife of Cars lead singer Ric Ocasek), as well, the first celebrity forced to say goodbye despite placing a strong sixth among the judges. Paulina was third from the bottom on my leaderboard; yet, I was unhappy to see someone with her potential leave so soon. My vote was instead firmly for Billy Ray Cyrus to take the first hike.
While the elimination obviously bothered Paulina—she looked close to tears a couple of times—she bid adieu with the utmost grace, refusing to say who she thinks will win because all of the other contestants are winners in her eyes. All together now: Awww! Paulina’s still a genuine beauty, although I believe she should lay some of the blame for her early exit on overly talkative judge Bruno Tonioli, whose repeated comments about upscale Tiffany’s and Fifth Avenue probably didn’t endear her to the average Janes and Joes of America who make up the largest part of the viewing audience.
