‘Criminal Minds’ Patinkin Successor Is Joe Mantegna

The FBI Procedural Finally Finds Its New Cast Member

Joe Mantegna I’m pretty pleased with the latest casting news coming out of the Criminal Minds camp. Following former star Mandy Patinkin‘s no-show act and subsequent departure in July, fans and media alike began to speculate who would take over the prominent role left vacant by the actor’s unexpected decision. In ensuing weeks, various names emerged as contenders, most notably including Geena Davis of Commander in Chief now-it’s-hot, now-it’s-not fame, and Harvey Keitel, the brilliant film actor who specializes in disturbing hardcore roles. Just last week, the buzz was growing deafeningly loud in reaction to the increasingly stronger possibility that Keitel and Criminal Minds would seal a deal. Unfortunately, the star allegedly wanted too much of too many things—such as perks—and the negotiations imploded.

Enter Joe Mantegna. On Friday, Criminal Minds executive producer Ed Bernero officially announced via the popular Criminal Minds Fanatic blog that the actor has agreed to join the cast. Although Mantegna is not a standout in my mind on a par with Keitel, I’ve observed his work in numerous movies and television shows, and I’m always happy to see his face pop up onscreen. He will no doubt prove a capable and harmonious addition to the series who will contribute to its longevity rather than hamper its progress.

If the Keitel casting coup had gone through, the much more prominent actor would have overshadowed everything and everyone on the set, from his fellow cast members to the scenery, just by being there and breathing; Keitel’s acclaim is that great. With the talented yet unassuming Mantegna, however, the Criminal Minds team has truly lucked out, and the forthcoming Patinkin-less third season should now do just fine.

Joe Mantegna’s résumé includes roles in Soap, The Godfather: Part III, The Simpsons (where he has enjoyed an unprecedented sixteen appearances as the character Fat Tony), USA’s recent Emmy-nominated hit mini-series The Starter Wife, and my personal favorite, CBS’ undeservedly short-lived Joan of Arcadia.
