Despite the vast amount of effort put into keeping details about the next X-Files flick under wraps, it looks like a title has finally been allowed to emerge from the secretive camp. And since a high-profile media entity like the Associated Press reported the news and directly attributed it to series creator Chris Carter, I guess it’s safe for us all to believe that the X-Files sequel is officially called The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

Hmmm… Well, if you watched the TV series during its nine-season run and paid attention, you probably already know where those familiar words after the colon come from. That’s right — that bareboned and butt-ugly UFO poster hanging on the wall in certified head believer Fox Mulder’s office.

Honestly — the thing was as stark and unappealing as the basement digs were. I also can’t say much more about the choice of the poster’s slogan as the movie’s title. It’s boring at worst, familiar at best, and hardly exciting either way.

In any case, I don’t want to believe because I already do. I also really want to just see the darn movie and wish the July 25 release date would hurry up and get here.

…at last.

As fans of The X-Files know, there’s been a lot of speculation regarding the lack of a title for the highly anticipated film sequel hitting theaters this summer on July 25. Movie website IESB.net reported yesterday, however, that the standoff between series creator Chris Carter and production studio 20th Century Fox has finally ended. Yes, the forthcoming flick has a title now, and it isn’t the incredibly tacky The X-Files: Done One.

According to IESB.net, the top two title picks were Carter’s X-Files: Full Moon Rising and studio executives’ X-Files: Curse of the Werepeople, both reflecting the werewolf theme of the picture. Thank goodness Carter has won the battle.

So, there you have it. If this development is correct, the second X-Files movie is entitled X-Files: Full Moon Rising. Sounds like a winner, although I plan to see the movie no matter what they call it. Even a tacky title can’t keep me away from more Mulder and Scully.

Note: Make sure to click all the links on the original IESB.net story.

X-Files Icon Will Host Masterpiece Theater

If you don’t know much about the personal life of Gillian Anderson, the actress who rose to worldwide fame while playing red-headed skeptic FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on The X-Files, then it will probably sound odd that PBS has tapped her to become the next host of its long-running and exceedingly venerable small-screen showcase Masterpiece Theater.

That’s just what has happened, though, as The New York Times reported last week. When Masterpiece Theater returns next year, it will have three different hosts, of which Anderson is just one, as well as an updated three-part structure. The series will now present three genres of programming: the familiar classic historical dramas in the first five months of the year, mystery entries in the summer during Masterpiece Mystery!, and contemporary dramas during the fall run of Masterpiece Contemporary.

Anderson, who lived in her current home of London for about a decade as a child, will host the Masterpiece Classic portion of the PBS series from January until May. And, she shouldn’t have any problems with the gig since she’s already starred in her very own Masterpiece mini-series, the BAFTA- and Peabody-winning Charles Dickens adaptation Bleak House from 2005.

Even if you’re not a PBS watcher, this is interesting news for those fans who’ll certainly be jonesing for a little Scully while Anderson reunites with her former costar David Duchovny to film the second X-Files feature film. Better still if you’re also a Jane Austen fan is the fact that the forthcoming season of Masterpiece Classic will revolve around six Austen novels.

In addition, Duchovny confirms that series creator Chris Carter is committed to directing the film and co-writing the script with fellow series veteran Frank Spotnitz, while co-star Gillian Anderson (FBI Special Agent Dana Scully) is due back, as well, to reprise her iconic skeptic role.
Uninitiated potential viewers—and some fans—will also probably be happy to learn that the second big-screen installation reportedly has a standalone plot that will serve as an independent film that people can enjoy no matter how (un)familiar they are with the mythology of the original TV show. Other fans with less-than-stellar memories will just be glad to know they don’t have to brush up on nine years of episodes (for a total of 202—Yikes!) beforehand to get back up to conspiracy-theory speed

If you’ve been wondering where petite actress Gillian Anderson went off to following the end of her seminal, long-running spooky series The X-Files in 2002, the answer is simple—she returned to England, the country she first called home for nine years as a child. During her stay, she has focused on distancing herself from the grueling demands of a television series, instead opting to contribute to ambitious but less time-consuming acting ventures like the award-winning, joint BBC-PBS mini-series adaptation of Charles Dickens’ 1853 novel Bleak House and the forthcoming British thriller Straightheads. Try as she might, however, to put her X-Files experiences behind her, increasingly optimistic news about the highly anticipated sequel to the 1998 The X-Files: Fight the Future film has generated enough buzz that even Anderson can no longer avoid it.

In a recent Empire interview, the actress best known as tenacious and super smart FBI Special Agent Dana Scully admits, “They’re starting to talk about doing a feature again. Every year or two they talk about it again, but it seems like it might be for real this time. Somehow it seems like somebody’s really serious about it. I know that Chris’ lawsuit with Fox is over, so maybe now it can be done.” Chris Carter is the creator of The X-Files whose ongoing legal dispute with 20th Century Fox over royalties from syndication of the series was a huge factor in preventing any future films from getting made.

When pressed for concrete details about the plot of the movie, Anderson declines to reveal anything specific. She does verify, though, that fans who fashion themselves conspiracy nuts, thriving on the TV show’s frequently occurring themes about covert alien and government cover-ups, probably won’t have any of those familiar story lines to look forward to. “All Chris says is that he wants to make a really scary horror, like a stand-alone episode,” Anderson states. “I don’t think they’re interested in touching on any of the conspiracy stuff.”

Personally, I’ll take whatever Carter, Anderson, and the rest of the cast and crew decide to put together. I’m just thrilled the wait is finally on its way to being over and that David Duchovny, who played Scully’s partner FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, is onboard, as well.

X-Files fans, put your conspiracy caps back on, because Scully and Mulder are returning to the silver screen. Anyone who loves the 1993–2002 series that helped redefine horror and sci-fi television as we know it is probably already aware that a follow-up to the popular 1998 movie The X-Files: Fight the Future has been contemplated for ages. At one point, it seemed like the feature would actually get in motion just last year. That is, until Gillian Anderson—also known as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully—became involved in a side project having a second child, a boy named Oscar born last November, and series creator Chris Carter remained embroiled in a legal battle with 20th Century Fox over royalties from syndication of the series.

Apparently, the recent settlement of the royalty lawsuit has put Carter and Fox back in planning mode, and both Anderson and costar David Duchovny, who played skeptical Scully’s open-minded partner FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, have been revealing as much in various interviews. According to the details they’ve shared, the next film will likely begin production in or before 2008, and it will avoid any hints of the pervasive government and alien conspiracies that underlaid much of the original series. In addition, the script will be helmed by Carter and Frank Spotnitz, an executive producer, writer, and occasional director of the earlier series and its two spinoffs, 1996′s Millennium and 2001′s The Lone Gunmen. These developments are some of the best news I’ve heard yet this year, and I count myself among the many, many fans eagerly anticipating the final product.

Bones, Angel, and Mulder: A Match Made in TV Heaven

One of the best shows on U.S. television right now, hands down, is Fox’s Bones. For the uninitiated, this hip, fresh, and smart (Did I include all of the best buzzworthy adjectives? I think I did.) crime procedural follows the gritty work of one Dr. Temperance Brennan (the exquisitely cast Emily Deschanel), an ace forensic anthropologist with an uncommon ability to reconstruct important clues about the dead using only their bones as reference, thus her nickname Bones. When law enforcement is stumped and unable to identify the cause of death or even the identity of the body itself, Brennan is who they call to beg for help. Smart beyond her years, despite an amusing total blind spot for pop culture (don’t even bother making sly references to it-girls of the moment like Paris, Lindsay, or Britney because she definitely doesn’t know who they are … or care, for that matter), Brennan eventually enters the realm of one Special Agent Seeley Booth, a man’s man FBI agent played pitch-perfectly by David Boreanaz of Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. Together, the two brainy and brawny—they’re each both—invesitgators team up to get to the bottom of hair-raising crimes that would otherwise remain unsolved in the cold case files forever.

Brennan and Booth receive some special love tonight when none other than David Duchovny—the one and only Fox Mulder from The X-Files, of course—steps behind the camera to direct a pivotal episode in this sophomore season. Entitled “Judas on a Pole,” the installment gets off to a typical puzzling start when Brennan and Booth first encounter a scorched body atop the Federal Building and then deduce that the deceased was too intimately involved with organized crime. Even odder connections become apparent after Brennan learns about a foreboding call her estranged brother Russ (Loren Dean) received recently from their long-absent father. Given Duchovny’s presence, how can we be surprised when it next turns out that a possible ongoing government conspiracy is at play? All we need now is a few aliens that bleed green goo, and perhaps a paranormal event or two, and I can almost see Gillian Anderson fighting back a smirk as she rolls her eyes behind Duchovny’s back.

There’s no doubt about it—Bones is *the* show to watch tonight.

Bones‘ “Judas on a Pole” episode debuts December 13 at 8pm EST on Fox
