Joshua Allen/So You Think You Can Dance

Even if he doesn’t receive the big prize tonight during the fourth-season finale, the 19-year-old hip-hop specialist will forever remain a SYTYCD standout in my mind.

Mr. Broken Record, better known as series co-creator and head judge Nigel Lythgoe, likes to go on and on about how Joshua has no training. That isn’t true since Joshua himself said in his interview last night that he used to do odd jobs around dance studios in lieu of paying cash for the classes he took.

Joshua does have less formal training than most of the other non-hip-hop finalists, however, which makes his skill performing on the dance floor that much more remarkable. Plus, he’s just a sweet, charming, respectful, dedicated, hardworking, and super talented doll. What more could America want?

Go, Joshua!

The two-hour So You Think You Can Dance fourth-season finale — which is about 119 minutes too long — airs at 8pm EST tonight.

It’s almost time for the ultimate battle to begin. The final six competitors on the fourth season of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance will be whittled down to just four on tonight’s elimination episode. Unbelievably, I can’t even begin to imagine which two dancers are going to get the big heave-ho.

The six remaining performers are the women Chelsie Hightower, Courtney Galiano, and Katee Shean, and the men Joshua Allen, Mark Kanemura, and Stephen “Twitch” Boss.

If I had to chose which male and female must leave the show right now, I would pick Twitch, simply because I believe Mark is a better overall performer at this point, and (calm my sobs!) Courtney, because I think Chelsie has the slightest edge over her after delivering more consistently good performances throughout the entire Top Twenty run.

My predictions aside, I can’t wait to see how America votes. Will viewers stun the world again like they did last week by eliminating Top Four favorite William Wingfield? The only way that could happen is if Joshua and/or Katee get the boot, and I’m just not jaded enough to see that happening.

Tune in to the “2 of 6 Voted Off” elimination episode tonight at 9pm EST on Fox. I know my eyes are going to be glued to the screen.

The Los Angeles Auditions

So You Think You Can Dance

The fourth season of So You Think You Can Dance — the best dance show on TV, hands down — got off to a nice start last night with two hours of Los Angeles auditions that went by fast, smoothly, and with few boring parts.

Highlights included choreographer-judge Mia Michaels cutting loose with a major Freudian slip, telling 21-year-old ripped but stuck-on-himself dancer Jonathan Anzalone that he was “not very sexful” (she meant to say he isn’t going to be very successful in the U.S. dance industry), not to mention the inevitable return of the true representative of not very sexful, dancer David, who prefers the delusional nickname Sex.

Below, my picks for the baddest of the bad, as well as one mind-boggling low. And, no, the last isn’t Sex, who’s awful anti-dancing we’ve all grown kind of used to after three auditions over as many years. If he doesn’t show up again during auditions next year, I’ll probably be disappointed.

Summer’s #1 Show Returns to the Tube Not a Moment Too Soon

So You Think You Can Dance I don’t have much love to spare for reality TV, but when it comes to the dance-themed shows, bring ‘em on. Just Tuesday, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars wrapped up its successful fourth season with a crowd-pleasing victory by five-time medal-winning Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and his sensational pro partner Julianne Hough. And on Fox, the American Idol behemoth just crowned its sixth and youngest ever champion, seventeen-year-old songstress Jordin Sparks, merely hours ago. Now, tonight, dance fans across America get to tune in to the third-season premiere of Fox’s other reality megahit, the top-rated summer series So You Think You Can Dance. I can’t wait.

Sunny British host Cat Deeley is back, as are veteran judge-choreographers Dan Karaty (hip-hop/pop), Mia Michaels (contemporary/modern), and Mary Murphy (ballroom/disco), the last of whom has received a deserved promotion to regular judge, which means she’ll be Woo-hoo’ing and annoying uninitiated viewers Paula Abdul-style all season long from a permanent spot on the judge’s panel. I like Mary, who has a nice effect on the only other permanent judge, bossman Nigel “I’m the Executive Producer” Lythgoe, so good for her. Hip-hop choreographer Shane Sparks, who joined the show during last summer’s second season, is also slated to put in some face time. As for my personal favorite, veteran hip-hop choreographer Brian Friedman, I haven’t heard a single word about his glaring absence from the judges roster, but I hope it’s all good.

First up on tonight’s 85-minute premiere (8pm EST/Fox) are the requisite audition rounds, starting with the sessions held in the first of four stops, New York City. Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles hoofers will get their moment in the spotlight in upcoming episodes, though its doubtful that the show will manage to cram in all 50,000 of the hopefuls who made this season’s audition turnout three times larger than last year’s. What a judging experience that must have been. If any of the prospective competitors are even half as talented as last year’s champ, humble sweetheart Benji Schwimmer, then we fans have got a whole lot of fantastic dancing to look forward to over the next few months. Up for grabs—the title America’s Favorite Dancer and a grand cash prize of $250,000. Sweet.

So You Think You Can Dance will regularly air Wednesdays at 8pm EST and Thursdays at 9pm EST on Fox

While Fox’s So You Think You Dance is definitely no American Idol-level phenomenon, it achieved a respectable feat on Wednesday night in the Nielsen ratings by attracting more viewers in the 18–49 age bracket than NBC’s omnipresent Deal or No Deal juggernaut. In fact, Dance was the highest rated show for that age group during the 9pm–10pm time period.

The high point comes with a low(er) point as well, however, since Deal actually drew more viewers overall.

Even so, Dance fans can now brag about how their show was No. 1 this week, as long as they don’t mind leaving out that irrelevant addendum “…on Wednesday night between 9 and 10pm among viewers ranging from 18 to 49 years old.” :-)

Hey, why not? The networks do it all the time.
