Fans of USA Network’s most recent crop of summer original series have absolutely nothing to worry about at the moment. Every single one of the shows will return for another season, now that the network has just renewed rookie Necessary Roughness, along with more seasoned Covert Affairs and Royal Pains.

The trio join Burn Notice, In Plain Sight, Suits, and White Collar, which received the good pickup news earlier. All but two of the shows have 16-episode orders for their next run. The notable exceptions are Burn Notice, which will include 16 to 18 episodes in its upcoming sixth season, and In Plain Sight, which will come to an end with an 8-episode fifth and final season.

2012 is looking great on USA Network!

USA Network’s Thursday-night lineup of Burn Notice and Royal Pains is about to leave the summer behind on August 26 when each show presents its summer finale. Don’t worry, be happy, though, because both series will return later with the remaining six episodes in their respective 18-episode current seasons.

Burn Notice is up first at 9pm ET with “Guilty As Charged.” While Michael helps a lawyer locate his daughter after a client abducts her, Fiona searches for Jesse to set up a meeting between him and Michael.

The midseason finale features returning guest star Robert Patrick (The Unit, The X-Files) from the previous episode, and appearances by Cold Case vet Danny Pino and Michael Rooker of the upcoming AMC zombie series The Walking Dead. Season-long recurring actor Robert Wisdom (Happy Town, The Wire) is back, too, as the mysterious Vaughn.

Royal Pains follows at 10pm with the creatively titled “Open Up Your Yenta Mouth and Say Ah.” While Hank deals with his latest client, who skips out on him before he can even begin treatment, Divya copes with her unexpectedly strong feelings after Adam becomes sick.

Continue below to sneak three long-ish peeks at the last new Burn Notice episode of the summer and a quick peek at the season’s last new Royal Pains installment.

We knew it was coming sooner or later, and now it has. USA Network just announced its wise decision to pick up both Burn Notice and Royal Pains for additional 16-episode seasons following mighty impressive ratings during the shows’ respective current seasons. Burn Notice is on run number three, while Royal Pains premiered in June 2009.

Says USA Network executive Jeff Wachtel: “We are thrilled to bring Royal Pains back for a new season. The show’s stellar success has earned its prominent residency at USA, where viewers expect high quality programming and smart, character-driven storytelling.”

Moreover, “Burn Notice is simply one of the hottest shows in all of television. It continues to excite us with the exceptional writing, acting and direction that has set the TV landscape on fire.”

According to the press release, Burn Notice is the #1 scripted series of 2009 on cable television in the 18–49 and 25–54 age groups, while Royal Pains is the #1 new original series on cable in 2009. Couldn’t have happened to two more deserving shows.

Broadway Veteran Back on TV

Broadway Veteran Back on TV

One of the recurring yet unforgettable characters on USA Network’s latest hit dramedy, the Hamptons-set medical series Royal Pains, is Ms. Newberg, played by stage veteran Christine Ebersole.

We first meet the colorful and wealthy resident during the pilot when Mark Feuerstein ‘s main character Dr. Hank Lawson resolves her problem with a “flat tire,” which turns out to be a deflated breast implant that leaves her with a lopsided chest right before an important gathering.

Ms. Newberg is also notable for being the first person in the elite Long Island enclave to retain Hank’s services on an as-needed basis — or probably more like “as-wanted” when it comes to demanding Ms. Newberg — with a lucrative ongoing contract.

Christine Ebersole is currently appearing alongside the likes of Angela Lansbury and Rupert Everett in the Broadway revival of the Noel Coward farce Blithe Spirit. She’s also the proud owner of two Best Actress Tony awards in the musical category, the first for 42nd Street and the second for Grey Gardens.

So, of course, it was a huge thrill when Ebersole recently agreed to answer questions about her current television role. Keep reading to learn what she revealed.

Is there anything you could tell us about the upcoming stories involving your character and any other characters on the show?

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: [On the July 16th episode], I give a bark mitzvah to my dog. My dog has a bark mitzvah, and all the guests come down with a mysterious ailment … then hijinks ensue. This is comedy at its finest.

How did you get the role of Ms. Newberg on Royal Pains, and what about the series convinced you to accept the role?

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: Well, I was offered the role. I didn’t have to audition, which is always nice. And what drew me to the role is I think she’s a very outspoken and kind of larger than life character, and [I get] to play somebody rich. That’s always fun.

And the great thing about doing the show is the locations that we get to visit are really just extraordinary. I get to see all these beautiful things. And to be a part of a comedy and to be working with the people that I’m working with is just a really rarified air.

So, it didn’t take much convincing when I read the script. I saw that it was such an intelligent, funny script, and with really well developed characters. And so it was kind of an easy decision.

Do you have any experience dealing with concierges doctors?

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: No, but I can say that, you know, because I’m 56, when I was in the ’50s, that’s when doctors made house calls. Doctors did make house calls back then. You didn’t have to be rich to get them either.

So, in a way, this is sort of like the old days, but now it’s just only afforded to the rich. But you also have to remember that Hank Lawson is very sort of reluctant to be a concierge doctor because his job is to really service the people. I mean, all people, not just rich people. So, that’s why he’s sort of reluctant.

But that’s what I think is great about the series is that it also shows you, you know, his humanity in terms of those people that can’t afford that kind of thing. He serves them, as well.

You mentioned that your character is going to be having a bark mitzvah for your dog.

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: I know. It’s so funny. It’s such a great episode. And the dogs are so cute in their little yarmulkes.

So, you could say Ms. Newberg’s a little bit eccentric.

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: She’s very eccentric, yes.

Where do you draw inspiration from for the character of Ms. Newberg? I know you’ve had a lot of Broadway roles. Do any of those help you out with this character?

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: Well, I think there are people in life that are sort of wealthy, eccentric, that you sort of draw from your imagination, and I think that’s really kind of what acting really is. It’s imagination, and I can certainly draw on a couple of people that I know personally that I won’t mention any names, but people that are very wealthy and sort of eccentric.

And I think money allows that sort of eccentricity because you can do things that other people normally can’t do, like have a bark mitzvah for your dog and have hundreds of people come over, and sit poolside, and have the rabbi read from the Torah. So, yes, I think it’s from life. It’s just sort of drawing from life and my imagination.

Ms. Newberg is kind of mysterious to us so far. Is there anything you can tell us about her personal life beyond the fact that she has a dog and a lot of money?

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: You know, these kinds of things you find out sort of piecemeal because when they draw up the characters, they don’t— You don’t necessarily always have all the information about the back story on the character, and these things sort of unfold as the episodes are presented.

But I did find out that I have a 22-year-old granddaughter [played by Kerry Bishé of the Fox/Ron Moore movie Virtuality], and I’m a dowager, I believe. In other words, I believe I’m a widow, and my husband was Jewish and had a lot of money. So, we had agreed to raise all the children Jewish, and I guess the dogs are included.

How do you enjoy filming in the Hamptons?

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: You know, [it's] fantastic. Can you imagine? I mean, it’s such a fun fantasy fulfilled where you have a location of a house that sits on the ocean, and it’s just this big mansion with a private beach, and it’s mine for the day, you know. So, it’s pretty great.

It’s always a treat to watch you perform. We get you at night in the show Blithe Spirit and then on TV in Royal Pains. How are you balancing that schedule?

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: Well, it’s pretty intense because I think really pretty much for the last month, I’ve been working literally seven days a week. So, my next day off is June 22, which is my daughter’s 13th birthday. So, I’m really looking forward to that.

I go do the show at night, finish around 10:30, and then go to the hotel. Get there by 11:00, and then get picked up at 6:00 to be taken out to Long Island to work all day, and then come back in and do the show at night.

So, it’s been pretty intense, but all great stuff. So, I’m very, very grateful that I’m able to participate in these different venues. But it doesn’t come without its challenges. I haven’t had a day off, so I’m really looking forward to June 22nd.

You were, a long time ago, on Ryan’s Hope. Do you have any anecdotes or anything interesting that you remember from being on that show?

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: Well, it’s a funny pattern, I think, that’s been set with me because when I was doing Ryan’s Hope, I was doing Oklahoma. So, I would get up and shoot the soap opera all day long and then go and play Ado Annie on Broadway at night. And that was 30 years ago, so I’m still doing the same thing.

“TB or Not TB” — That Is the Question

Ooh, la la! Check out the Royal Pains photo above. Could it be that displaced Dr. Hank Lawson and Hamptons hospital administrator extraordinaire Jill Casey are getting closer to doing “the deed”? Or is it just another false start, destined to be interrupted before the deed gets done?

I have not the slightest clue, so tune in to tonight’s fresh June 25 episode “TB or Not TB” to find out what the deal is with that beach face-to-face.

During the episode, HankMed takes on the case of one Allison Moore (Callie Thorne of FX’s Rescue Me, pictured above, the most under-promoted super-awesome guest star in basic-cable history — you’d think USA Network would be shouting about her appearance from the mountaintops), the head chef and owner of a happening Hamptons food establishment.

Hank attempts to help her avoid serious damage after she suffers a stroke, but, unfortunately, the cuisine expert disappears before he can give her the necessary treatment. In other words, get ready for another medical mystery that’s a tad more mysterious than usual.

Of course, the sneak peek below has nothing to do with saving lives. The scene is just brothers Hank and Evan sorta playing tennis, which is much more entertaining than it sounds. A promo clip follows, as well.

Check out the June 18th episode on USA Network at 10pm ET. A sneak peek and promo follow below for your convenience.

So far, the new dramedy is doing quite well in the ratings and among critics and viewers. I think a second-season announcement is only a matter of time.

Lipstick Jungle Star Travels to the Hamptons

If you were a fan of the menfolk on NBC’s recently canceled female-centric dramedy Lipstick Jungle, then you’re in luck. Tonight (June 11), former cast member Andrew McCarthy makes his way to NBC’s sister network USA to guest star on “There Will Be Food,” the latest episode of basic cable’s newest hit series, Royal Pains.

McCarthy plays the character Marshall Bryant, and that’s all I can tell you because that’s all I know about his role. The episode has two major storylines, though. In the first, Dr. Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein) takes on a new client, a ballerina who falls ill after Hank’s brother Evan (Paulo Costanzo) stuffs her with junk food, which she gave up for many years in order to remain a skinny dancer.

Meanwhile, the second plot involves hospital administrator Jill Casey (Jill Flint), who gets drunk and then says quite a lot about her feelings to Hank after her free clinic hits a snag with funding.

Watch Royal Pains Thursdays on USA Network at 10pm ET, and continue down below for a “There Will Be Food” sneak peek and promo. The second video features a quick look at McCarthy in action.

USA Network Rolls Out Another Original Dramedy

USA Network Rolls Out Another Original Dramedy

USA Network has been promoting the heck out of its latest original dramedy Royal Pains, which finally debuts tonight at 10pm ET, following the Season Three premiere of hit spy dramedy Burn Notice at 9pm. Is the newcomer worth watching?

Well, I only had the chance to preview the pilot, an extended episode of about 75 minutes that will air with limited commercial interruption for the premiere. It was directed by Jace Alexander, who has previously worked on USA’s Burn Notice, as well as the Sci Fi Channel’s upcoming dramedy Warehouse 13, and the experience shows.

Based on the premise — which isn’t exactly intriguing, in my opinion — I expected to not like the newbie. But it turns out the pilot actually works and makes the humdrum notion of a blacklisted doctor becoming a reluctant on-call M.D. in New York’s posh Hamptons community both entertaining and even interesting.

Mark Feuerstein (3 lbs., The West Wing, Good Morning, Miami) plays lead character Hank Lawson, a compassionate hospital physician who finds himself fired and unable to get another comparable job after he tries to save a young neighborhood man’s life instead of a rich bigwig’s. Since Murphy’s TV Law dictates that problems come in batches, Hank’s pretty fiancée also breaks up with him after the professional downsizing, leaving Hank with lots of time to drown in a non-stop cycle of boozing, bad TV, and self-pity.

Thankfully, Hank’s younger brother Evan (Paulo Costanzo, Joey), an often annoying and always enterprising accountant who likes the ladies and the good life, comes to his rescue before it’s too late and whisks the doctor away to the Hamptons so they can lie their way into a little fun at a swank house party. Yet, smack in the middle of the good time, Hank stumbles upon a medical emergency and instinctively goes into life-saver mode, an act that catches the attention of the area’s wealthy residents, who then refuse to take “no” for an answer when they want him to show up on the fly to tend to their medical needs.

As a result, within hours of his arrival, members of the Hamptons’ elite population begin calling Hank on the phone to come rescue them from their own bad judgment, and complete stranger Divya Katdare (Reshma Shetty, 30 Rock) even shows up at his motel to talk her way into a non-existent job as his physician’s assistant. The one bright spot in the weirdness that follows is Jill Casey (Jill Flint, Gossip Girl), a down-to-earth administrator at the local hospital, whom Hank is immediately attracted to when he meets her at the party.

While that plot isn’t exactly exciting stuff for fans of USA’s crime-oriented dramedies, the Royal Pains pilot succeeds due to nice pacing, extremely cool music, and Feuerstein, who plays Hank as a kind but no-nonsense professional more concerned about “doing no harm” than doing whatever powerful people want. I’m not as gaga over the supporting characters, but maybe they’ll grow on me as the story unfolds and the season progresses.

I should also warn potential viewers that Royal Pains aims for authenticity when it comes to Hank in action, à la medical shows like ER and House. So, be prepared for a few Nip/Tuck-worthy moments every now and then, such as closeup looks at needles sinking into skin, blades cutting across body parts, and blood oozing out of wounds.
