Law & Order: Criminal Intent Retires

Geesh, the eight episodes in the tenth and final season of USA Network crime procedural Law & Order: Criminal Intent went by fast, and now it’s time for fans of the best L&O ever to say goodbye during the June 26 series finale “To the Boy in the Blue Knit Cap.”

The last case on the roster for New York detectives Alex Eames (Kathryn Erbe) and Robert Goren (Vincent D’Onofrio) revolves around two murdered people who worked at an Internet business embroiled in a major legal dispute. Dawson’s Creek alum James Van Der Beek guest stars.

Although the series finale is a low point of the summer season, at least fans can interact with stars Erbe and D’Onofrio on Twitter during the premiere of “To the Boy in the Blue Knit Cap” to give them a fitting goodbye. Just log into your Twitter account and head over to @USA_LawOrderCI to tweet with Erbe at 9pm ET and D’Onofrio at 12am ET (which is 9pm in Pacific time, when the episode debuts on the West Coast). I will definitely miss them both.

Sundays on USA Network are going to be exciting yet bittersweet this summer. Although fans definitely appreciate having fresh installments of both Law & Order: Criminal Intent and In Plain Sight to watch, the first crime drama will be presenting its 10th and too-short final season of just eight episodes.

The summer fun begins tonight, May 1, at 9pm ET with much-missed detectives Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe) and Bobby Goren (Vincent D’Onofrio) investigating on the “Rispetto” season premiere of the Law & Order spinoff. Actor Jay Mohr (Gary Unmarried, Ghost Whisperer) guest stars.

In Plain Sight follows in the 10pm time slot with its Season 4 premiere “The Art of the Steal.” Since the newer series has a total of 13 episodes during the current run, fans will get to watch it a bit longer in coming weeks. We’ll take what we can get of both shows.

Finally, what fans have been awaiting for months. USA Network has at last scheduled the season premieres of crime series In Plain Sight and Law & Order: Criminal Intent for the lovely month of May.

Both shows are now joined at the time slot and will return on Sunday, May 1. Law & Order: Criminal Intent, back for its tenth and last season of eight episodes with original series stars Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe thankfully in place, starts the night off at 9pm ET.

In Plain Sight follows on Sundays at 10pm with 13 episodes in its fourth season. The show’s third season ended abruptly three episodes early at the end of June 2010 due to showrunner John McNamara‘s leave for medical reasons, so many viewers will be that much more happy to see Mary, Marshall and Stan in action again.

Welcome back to both missed series. Spring is looking better already.

Some TV shows become like a comfy security blanket the longer they last, and the Law & Order spinoff Law & Order: Criminal Intent definitely belongs in that group. The crime procedural is back on USA Network tonight, March 30, at 10pm ET to launch its ninth season.

The spring run begins with “Mad Mullah,” Part One of the two-part premiere, which concludes on April 6 with “Loyalty.” An overseas incident somehow involves Captain Ross, and, of course, his loyal Major Case detectives leap to help him when needed.

Sneak a peek at “Mad Mullah” below before catching the entire episode.

The Best Law & Order Opens Season 8

The Best Law & Order Opens Season 8

Following a nearly eight-month hiatus, Law & Order: Criminal Intent returns to USA Network at 9pm ET tonight to begin its eighth season of 16 episodes. Onboard for the premiere “Playing Dead” is excellent guest star Kathy Baker (Picket Fences), who just completed another noteworthy stint on TNT’s Saving Grace.

If you happen to love Criminal Intent as much as yours truly — it’s been my favorite Law & Order series since its debut — then tonight’s episode should please you a great deal.

The plot revolves around Councilman Neil Hayes-Fitzpatrick (Scott Cohen, Law & Order: Trial by Jury), a New York City politician, and his drug addict stepdaughter Stacy. She somehow remains sober enough to live through a gunman’s sudden assault by pretending to be dead, although her boyfriend, a fellow addict and dealer, isn’t such a fortunate fast thinker.

Baker plays the councilman’s mother and campaign manager, who seems to be as stunned as everyone else upon learning Stacy and her dead ex were involved with attempts to blackmail the powerful family. However, Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Detective Bobby Goren, once again working smoothly with his partner Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe) after a seventh season filled with much trouble and tension, quickly notes the surviving victim’s odd behavior regarding Neil.

Once the observation is out of the bag, it combines with some typically adept sleuthing from Goren and Eames to provide viewers with several unexpected but entirely satisfying developments. How lucky we fans are to have Criminal Intent back and in great shape, with new player Detective Zach Nichols (Jurassic Park‘s Jeff Goldblum) making his first appearance next week alongside his partner Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson). More on that before his debut episode, April 26th’s “Rock Star.”

Who’s That in the Body Bag?

Tonight, at 9pm EST, the seventh season of Law & Order: Criminal Intent will close with a finale called “Frame.” Since the TV spots are heavy on the Bobby Goren and light on the Alex Eames, we can pretty much guess which detective the frame business applies to … Goren, of course.

The brief trailer in the video below also hints a big blast from the past awaits Goren in the form of the ever-elusive cunning temptress and lethal criminal Nicole Wallace, always played chillingly by Olivia d’Abo. Doesn’t that look just like her in the lightning-quick snippet where a blonde woman turns to face the camera but never quite shows her face?

My assumption is supported by the episode description, which says Goren will take a dangerous journey back into his earlier life after a photo is left at his mother’s grave. Let’s just hope that’s not him in the body bag. I’d bet money it isn’t, too, unless it’s a trick to fool someone.

The teaser promo for “Frame” follows.

Not too long ago, the biggest stories regarding NBC’s Law & Order franchise were all about the original series that started it all. Specifically, the chatter in the fall focused on the show’s auspicious addition of actors Linus Roache and Jeremy Sisto (thank you to whoever made those choices a reality).

Later, talk turned to the imminent voluntary departure of longtime series regular Jesse L. Martin and the subsequent arrival of new cast member Anthony Anderson. Martin’s exit will occur on the April 23, first post-hiatus episode “Burn Card,” so mark your calendars now, L&O groupies.

News and gossip about the show has shifted this week with TV Guide‘s article featuring a familiar face on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, namely Diane Neal, who has portrayed Assistant District Attorney Casey Novak since 2001.

Initially it seemed Neal would be departing the show this season because she wanted to pursue other projects now that her current contract is almost over. Yet, TV Guide updated the original story on April 17 with new rumors that Neal has in fact been fired.

Unless someone “official” admits either version, we lowly viewers will likely never know what the true reason is. Either way, the reality is that soon SVU will have a different ADA. I was never fond of Neal’s character in the first place — she struck me as self-righteous and quick to make rash judgments. So, I definitely won’t be among those fans who’ll miss Novak, although I do hope Neal moves on to bigger and better things.

As for the third series in the franchise, Law & Order: Criminal Intent — my personal favorite until Roache, Sisto, and Anderson became attached to L&O #1 — will undergo a cast change, as well, but a return rather than a technical departure or arrival.

Actress Julianne Nicholson, who took maternity leave during the first half of the current seventh season while Alicia Witt substituted, will rejoin the series when its 12-episode summer run begins on June 8. Since I’ve always felt Nicholson is fantastic in her role as Detective Megan Wheeler, I personally can’t wait to have her back.

It’s about time! NBC has finally announced a premiere date for the 18th—that’s right, eighteenth—season of television’s longest-running crime procedural in history, venerable old Law & Order. How I miss that show.

The time to tune in for the two-hour opening episode is Wednesday, January 2, at 9pm EST. L&O will then return to its familiar 10pm time slot the following week, when it will be joined at 9pm by Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

The younger CI spinoff was sent to NBC’s basic-cable sister network USA for the beginning of its fall run, where it’s earned some respectable ratings, making The Peacock’s decision to rebroadcast episodes no surprise.

As a result of the two staples’ arrival, fans can say goodbye for now to the newbies Bionic Woman, which needs some serious work before it comes back, and Life. Both rookies will have aired all of their original episodes completed before the writers strike by the time this week is over.

Look out for two new cast members when the flagship L&O returns, Jeremy Sisto and England native Linus Roache. Both thespians starred in one of the best new series canceled too soon last fall, NBC’s riveting Kidnapped. To say that I’m psyched for the arrival of each actor is among the most colossal understatements ever.

Adding to my anticipation is the promotion of series veteran Sam Waterston to the top-dog position of Executive A.D.A. on the show. I sense some notable and commendable improvements ahead.

The Sidekick Steps Up in Season Premiere

Did you catch television history being made last night when Law & Order: Criminal Intent completed the jump from broadcast network NBC, the series’ home for its first six seasons, to basic-cable network USA, an NBC affiliate? If you didn’t and you’re an L&O fan, you really missed out.

For ages, Criminal Intent devotees have been clamoring for that other detective, Bobby Goren’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) cool and competent longtime partner Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe), to finally get a storyline capable of elevating her from mere Goren sidekick to a full-fledged crimebuster in her own right, especially since she’s technically the senior member of their partnership.

Those hopes were briefly addressed in the sixth season’s riveting premiere “Blind Spot,” which features Eames getting kidnapped by a deranged criminal and then cleverly escaping. But, the show didn’t maintain the momentum of character development for Eames as the season progressed, and soon the plots more or less fell back to the “Bobby the Troubled Brainiac Show” during the alternating installments that feature the Eames-Goren team (Detectives Logan (Chris Noth) and Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson) headline the other half).

In the seventh-season premiere “Amends,” however, Eames steps out of Goren’s shadow and comes to the forefront in a big way again. The central event of the plot takes place in Jamaica, Queens, right smack dab near my old neighborhood, where a detective is murdered in his car off of Hillside Avenue, which I lived next to for over a decade. It’s soon revealed that the slain officer was the partner of Eames’ late husband, who was also killed on the job while working undercover nine years ago.

The episode then explores several themes that bring Alexandra Eames to life as an independent person with a very real and very painful past, marked by the reality of what happens to the family members left behind after a police officer dies in the line of duty. If you weren’t a Criminal Intent watcher before, now just might be the time to take another look at the show. That basic-cable sheen is already evident, hinting that the series might become grittier and more gripping than ever, in a way that only cable programming permits. Given the successful transition indicated by the premiere, viewers are in for an intriguing and revealing seventh season.

USA is giving everyone a chance to catch up on the second L&O spinoff this weekend, when it will air a marathon of select sixth-season episodes from 9am to 11pm EST on Sunday. You can also watch replays of the seventh-season premiere “Amends” this Saturday at 11pm and next Friday night at 10pm.
