Today brings bad, sad news for fans of ABC Family’s science-fiction drama Kyle XY … if it’s true.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting the network has decided to cancel the series, currently just three episodes into its ten-episode third season, presumably because of declining ratings. *sigh* Wouldn’t it be great if we lived in a TV world where those kinds of numbers didn’t matter so much?

On the upside for ABC Family fans — although probably not so much for those who just like Kyle — the network has also reportedly renewed the urban drama Lincoln Heights for a fourth season of an as yet unannounced number of episodes. In addition, the college dramedy Greek is said to have a third season of twenty episodes on its plate.

Both entertaining shows really deserve the vote of confidence, so I guess two out of three is better than one out of three or none. And, while it’s still early days, I predict Kyle XY‘s Monday-night companion, the freshman hit The Secret Life of the American Teenager, has nothing to worry about in the renewal department, either.

That leaves just The Middleman to worry about, I believe. Fingers crossed ABC Family will have the guts to hang on to at least one sci-fi show.

…Dan from California!!!

When stating who his favorite character on Kyle XY is and why, the lucky random winner eloquently wrote:

My favorite character on the show is Nicole Trager because she’s such a compassionate person and a great mother. My favorite scenes are those between her and Kyle. I love the special bond between them.

I couldn’t agree more. Nicole is played by lovely American actress Marguerite MacIntyre. And incidentally, Nicole was the only adult character mentioned because Dan was the only entrant who listed an adult character as his fave.

The highest number of votes went to the title character with the gorgeous eyes, of course, namely Kyle, who’s played by 25-year-old (I know—he’s that old?!) Matt Dallas. The ladies really love him apparently.

Congratulations to the big winner and a special thanks to all who took the time to enter the giveaway and share their opinions. It was a blast.

Now that the ongoing writers strike has put such a crimp in TV’s style, the fact that the extended second season of Kyle XY kicks back in next Monday night is some of the best news around.

Thirteen of the 23 ordered episodes already aired last summer, leaving ten to go throughout mid-March. To kick off the show’s return on January 14 and help fans remember where the story left off, ABC Family has considerately scheduled an all-day marathon Monday to precede the 8pm EST midseason premiere “To C.I.R., With Love.”

From 11am to 8pm, catch nine of the installments from the first half of the season. And, if you’re a really big fan of the show, enter the contest sponsored right here at tv|jots. Up for grabs is a poster like that below, signed by Kyle XY cast members.

If you’d like a chance to snag that one-of-a-kind prize and you live in North America, just email jotDOTblogsATgmailDOTcom and tell me who your favorite Kyle XY character is and why. Don’t forget to replace DOT with a period and AT with the @ symbol in the email address before firing your message off.

The deadline for entering is Friday, January 25, at 11:59pm, after which I will select one winner at random. Good luck to all who enter.

ABC Family Sticks with Hit Sci-Fi Series

When ABC decided in July not to continue airing same-week Friday-night repeats of its sister channel ABC Family’s hit sophomore sci-fi series Kyle XY like it did the previous year, I instantly (and understandably) became concerned that the show’s low ratings during the rebroadcasts probably meant it wouldn’t make it to a third season. Well, my concern was all for nothing because ABC Family announced on October 5 that the always intriguing series will indeed return for Round #3.

Kyle XY is currently on hiatus between the front and back ends of a split season, which is common on basic cable. According to Variety, during its present season, the show was not only the second most popular basic-cable program in its time slot among female teenagers, but it enjoyed an 8% ratings increase in the 18–34 demographic. Nice job!

The series, which stars Matt Dallas as an uncommonly intelligent teenage boy, returns in 2008 to wrap up its second season, although ABC Family has not yet released a premiere date. Fans can breathe easier all the same knowing that yet another captivating season waits in the wings.

No—Matt Dallas‘ bellybutton-less character will not be knocking up a girl, at least not that I know of. Instead, this news refers to some excellent casting. TV Guide is reporting that the wise people behind ABC Family’s sensational Kyle XY have landed an icon from the 1980s movie scene to guest star: Ally Sheedy.

If you know anything about 80s flicks, then you know that Sheedy—along with fellow angst-filled females Molly Ringwald and Demi Moore—was a recurring face in that era’s most celebrated young adult-oriented coming-of-age films, including the popular St. Elmo’s Fire (which featured Moore and male brats Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, and Judd Nelson) and the teen cult classic The Breakfast Club (with Estevez and Nelson again, plus Ringwald and Dead Zone-r Anthony Michael Hall).

According to TV Guide, Sheedy will portray the mother of Kyle’s female counterpart, Jessi XX (Jaimie Alexander), for three episodes at the very end of the show’s second season. Those installments aren’t slated to air until 2008, but at least older fans of the series have something to get even more excited about in the meantime.

Alphabet Network Discontinuing Repeats of Basic-Cable Hit

This week brought sad, bad news for fans of the hit sophomore sci-fi drama Kyle XY who have been following the Friday-night replays on ABC because they either don’t have access to the originating basic-cable network ABC Family or don’t live in the United States (for example, Canadians), which forces them to rely on repeats on the more widely available broadcast network. According to TV Week, as of Monday, ABC has officially decided to pull the weekly episodes from the schedule. The reason? The four second-season repeats that have aired to date have consistently drawn some of the lowest ratings of the night, whether ABC scheduled them at 8pm or 9pm EST. I kid you not when I say I’m shocked that this could happen to such a great show.

Tonight only, look for two episodes of the recently canceled sitcom George Lopez at 8pm, followed at 9pm by the hour-long pilot for the new ABC Family dramedy Greek that premiered on Monday. The latter show stars the 23-year-old daughter of Frasier and Cheers veteran Kelsey Grammer, Spencer Grammer, and she is quite good in her role, if I do say so myself (and, of course, I just did).

The Highly Anticipated Second Season Premieres Monday

No one, probably least of all ABC Family, anticipated that a little old teen-oriented sci-fi show called Kyle XY would take off the way it did last summer. Exceeding every expectation, the intriguing plot about a bellybutton-less amnesiac with incredible intelligence gave the basic-cable network its best ratings ever for an original series and simultaneously locked in a second season of thirteen episodes, three more than in the first year. Well, the wait for Season Two is now finally almost over because Kyle XY returns to the tube Monday night at 8pm EST, complete with a female bellybutton-deprived counterpart for our beloved hero Kyle (Matt Dallas)—Jessi XX, played by series newcomer Jaimie Alexander (Rest Stop)—and a new story line that revolves around the purpose of Jessi’s introduction.

When we last left the series, Kyle departed the supportive Trager family after a bogus couple stepped forward claiming that he was their son. Kyle was aware that the people were not really related to him, but he complied with their scheme in order to protect the Tragers from harm and, presumably, learn more about his past from the vantage point of an insider.

Season Two unveils Jessi XX, a teenage girl whose origins and existence are equally mysterious as Kyle’s, with the added kicker that she is just as malevolent as he is benign. Moreover, whereas Kyle had the good fortune to end up with the relatively normal and eventually welcoming Trager family after he woke up alone in the woods, Jessi doesn’t fare so well when she emerges from nowhere in the heat of an explosion. Instead, she is captured by people who are up to no good and then tasked with infiltrating Kyle’s world. Posing as a patient of Trager matriarch and compassionate psychologist Nicole (Marguerite MacIntyre), she then proceeds to carry out her mission with a determination as relentless as Kyle’s.

While everyone else gets excited about this new character Jessi, who will most definitely prove a fascinating foil and maybe even future ally of the original teen from nowhere, I’m reserving all of my happiness for the return of Tom Foss, played by X-Files veteran Nicholas Lea. Lea was superb as duplicitous Alex Krycek in the earlier groundbreaking show, and he’s done no less a fantastic job with the Foss character in Kyle XY. In fact, it was largely because I knew he would appear in the series that I became hooked earlier than most fans. I’m currently psyched beyond words that he’s back for the second go-round, which makes me confident that good times will begin in earnest on TV this summer when the second season of Kyle XY premieres next Monday.

As an added bonus to help fans catch up with the series and to allow the uninitiated to learn what all the fuss is about, ABC Family is airing a marathon of the entire ten-episode first season on Sunday, June 10, from 1pm to 11pm EST.

From the official ABC Family press release regarding Season Two of Kyle XY:

More questions arise and the risk of danger escalates in the second season of the hit ABC Family original series “Kyle XY.” Kyle begins to learn the truth about his past, but under the strict training of Tom Foss, he must also learn the full scope of his abilities. And all of this must be kept secret — even from the Tragers, who just want to help him return to the life of a normal teenager. Kyle must learn to live with his double life and the unknown dangers that lurk outside the family’s walls. The peril only increases when the girl in the pod is set free and is on the hunt for Kyle. But can Kyle keep the threats away or will they come straight through the Trager’s front door? “Kyle XY” stars Matt Dallas, Marguerite MacIntyre, Bruce Thomas, April Matson, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Chris Olivero, Kirsten Prout and Jaimie Alexander.

Starting tonight at 8pm EST and continuing on each subsequent Monday for the next couple of months, ABC Family is gifting viewers with the most welcomed opportunity to relive all ten episodes of Kyle XY‘s phenomenal debut season. In case your brain has checked out for a quick coffee break or you just never were in the know, Kyle XY is the sneaky little sci-fi series that crept up on television audiences last summer and beguiled them with the tale of a nameless teenage boy (Matt Dallas) sans any memories who wandered out of the woods near Seattle, Washington, buck-naked one day, right into the initially skeptical, but eventually loving arms of the typically American Trager family.

Over the course of each installment, we learned more and more about Kyle’s mysterious background, which indicated that the boy with the amazing blue eyes was created rather than born. Still, we didn’t care much about that interesting detail because as he grew increasingly accustomed to his new life around pesky humans—including the Tragers themselves: psychologist mom Nicole (Marguerite McIntyre), businessman dad Stephen (Bruce Thomas), and teenage children Lori (April Matson) and Josh (Jean-Luc Bilodeau)—Kyle revealed himself to be one of the most charming, intelligent, compassionate, and endearing “beings” anywhere.

The freshman season ended with Kyle leaving the Tragers to live with his fake real parents, the Petersons, a predicament that fans are eager to see resolved when the thirteen-episode second season arrives this summer on June 11. Until then, the informed can relive the wonders of Season One, while newcomers can experience the incredibly entertaining adventures they missed out on the first time around.

Now most widely recognized as the brother of the man with the plan (Michael Scofield, played by Wentworth Miller) in Fox’s hit jailhouse drama Prison Break, Australian Dominic Purcell was first introduced to American television audiences four years ago in Fox’s provocative series John Doe. Although the show lasted just one season, it managed to attract a substantial number of diehard fans intrigued by the mysterious titular character, who awoke naked one day on an island with no recollection of his identity or background, yet possessing an eerie awareness of seemingly every other fact known to mankind.

Before John Doe worked its way to the small screen, another series that could not be more different also carved a space on television for its unique main character over the four-year period from 1989 to 2003. This family drama, Life Goes On, had a stellar cast that included Bill Smitrovich, Patti LuPone, Kellie Martin, and Chris Burke, the last of whom portrayed the endearing middle brother Corky, an ambitious teenager determined to attend high school with his younger sister Becca (Martin) and lead as close to a normal life as possible, despite having Down Syndrome.

Fast forward three years to this summer and ABC Family’s new teen-oriented sci-fi drama Kyle XY, one of the biggest hits of the season. Like John Doe, the puzzling titular character Kyle (Matt Dallas) wakes up buck-naked one day alone in the woods, with no idea who he is or where he’s from, and wanders out into the middle of traffic on a busy street. The police intervene and send him to a juvenile facility, for lack of a more appropriate place to house him, where his case finds its way to the compassionate hands of social worker Nicole Trager (Marguerite MacIntyre).

Captivated by his elusive origins and smitten by his warm and childlike personality, Nicole temporarily takes Kyle into her own home, which includes her husband Stephen (Bruce Thomas) and their typical teenage daughter (April Matson) and son (Jean-Luc Bilodeau), until a better one surfaces. It’s during this assumed brief stay that the Trager family slowly realizes the bellybutton-less Kyle is not only unlike anyone else they’ve ever encountered before, but unlike anyone else on Earth.

As Kyle adapts to life in a social environment and bonds with others, he likewise learns important lessons about what it is to be human and a member of a larger unit outside oneself. Yet, unbeknownst to all in the household, an unidentified man (Nicholas Lea) is keeping a steady watch over them from the shadows, promising danger and more intrigue as the ten-episode debut season winds down.

One of the reasons why Kyle XY has become such a popular program is the charming performance of 23-year-old lead actor Matt Dallas. His wide-eyed innocent expressions skillfully evoke the wonder and curiosity of a teenaged boy who is essentially a blank slate filling up step by step with the little details that help usher human beings out of adolescence and into adulthood. That Kyle turns out to be a genius in many respects comes as no surprise, largely because Dallas’ subtle mannerisms successfully capture the character’s latent intelligence, as well.

After watching the premiere of Kyle XY and observing the natural and realistic rapport between the members of the Trager family and their unexpected guest, it’s easy to understand why the show is a hit. It delivers an abundance of mystery in the style of John Doe, while simultaneously maintaining the appealing atmosphere of a family drama such as Life Goes On. Moreover, just like both the John Doe and Corky characters before him, Kyle serves as the ingenuous centerpiece of a chain of events that consistently enlighten viewers even as they entertain.

The only way Kyle XY can miss right now is to disappoint fans with an incomprehensible or incongruent explanation of Kyle’s origins. Judging from the show’s ability to maintain its momentum thus far, however, that’s about as probable as Kyle discovering something he can’t do.

The Verdict: A

Kyle XY currently airs Mondays at 8pm EST on ABC Family and repeats Fridays at 9pm EST on ABC
