‘Battlestar Galactica’ Producers Announce the Series’ Definite End After the Upcoming Fourth Season
But Fans Are Promised a Big Bang of a Finale As Consolation
Producers David Eick and Ronald Moore recently delivered both unbelievably disappointing bad news *and* nerve-wrackingly exciting news to fans of the award-winning Sci Fi Channel series Battlestar Galactica. Yes, as rumored since last month, the gripping futuristic space fable will definitely reach the end of its splendid run when the fourth season concludes next year. In Eick and Moore’s own words delivered via a formal statement on May 31:
This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle and finally, an end. Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end and we’ve decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms.
The revelation—not unexpected in the least given recent rampant speculation and the reality that the critically acclaimed yet severely ratings-challenged BSG is simply a very expensive show to produce for a little old basic-cable network—confirms that in addition to playing their roles with much praiseworthy aplomb, stars Edward James Olmos (Admiral William Adama) and Katee Sackhoff (Captain Kara “Starbuck” Thrace) were not trying to pull a fast one on fans when they basically spoiled this outcome in classic TV fashion during May 10 interviews at the 33rd Annual Saturn Awards in California.
But wait—There is a notable and welcome upside to the sobering news, however, for Eick and Moore also state in the same breath that BSG followers “should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there – we’re going out with a bang.”
Well, frak me, baby! If a wonderful thing must come to an end, there’s no more fitting way than with a bang. And considering that every single episode of the series contains more than maximum action, drama, and intrigue for the average television viewer, I’m thinking this promised bang is gonna be galaxy-sized. Join me, fellow BSG fans, as I begin prematurely anticipating a television event that will no doubt prove truly worth remembering.
Moreover, one last piece of good news is that although Battlestar‘s 22-episode fourth season officially begins in January 2008, Sci Fi Channel will broadcast a new, extended two-hour episode called “Razor” a whole two months earlier in November. And as usual for Sci Fi, we can also anticipate additional marathons of entire previous seasons as the new, now final season approaches.
