‘Battlestar Galactica’ Executive Producer Refutes Final Fourth-Season Claim

Says Star Olmos Has Prematurely Declared the Show’s Demise Before

Battlestar Galactica Whew! That was a close one for fans of Sci Fi Channel’s splendid science-fiction series Battlestar Galactica, if you believe the latest bit of news making the rounds in the cancellation saga. Despite the rampant rumor at the end of last week that the approaching fourth season of the series would be its last, executive producer David Eick has spoken up to spread the contradictory news that star Edward James Olmos announced the show’s end too early on May 10 during an interview with media at the 33rd Annual Saturn Awards in California. At that time, Olmos, who plays Admiral William Adama, stated that the season slated to begin in January 2008 would be the series’ “final season.” His co-star Katee Sackhoff, who plays Captain Kara “Starbuck” Thrace, later essentially confirmed Olmos’ revelation when she offered a reason for why she thinks the program would end after the fourth season, namely because it’s “an expensive show” and it doesn’t “have the viewership that a great show should get.”

In the May 11 Eick article published by SCI FI Wire, an online news site sponsored by the same Sci Fi Channel that Battlestar Galactica calls home, the producer does not mention Sackhoff at all. His comments instead refer only to Olmos, whom he states “has [previously] made an announcement about the possibility of the show’s end.” Eick further promises that when a decision is made about ending the series, viewers will receive notice directly from the executive producers.

Whether Battlestar signs off or not, Sackhoff has already started the transition to her next series, as indicated by the casting news last week that she will appear in NBC’s recently picked-up adaptation of the 1970s sci-fi series The Bionic Woman.
