Season Two Winter Run Begins
USA Network’s sports-themed original series Necessary Roughness opens the winter portion of its sophomore season tonight, January 23, at 10pm ET with “Frozen Fish Sticks,” the 12th of 16 total scheduled episodes.
When we last killed time with the good Dr. Danielle Santino (Callie Thorne) & Company some five months ago, brash but troubled pro football player T.K. King (Mehcad Brooks) got an eye-opening lesson in excess from his old rehab pal Jimmy (excellent guest star Michael Imperioli) and eccentric New York Hawks team owner Marshall Pittman (Evan Handler) was discovered dead.
The season resumes with Dani, T.K., and everyone else affiliated with the Hawks attempting to carry on with their lives and careers, despite the new and continued difficulties they face. Complications include Dani’s need to undergo some counseling herself before she starts counseling others again and T.K.’s realization that returning to the football field won’t be so simple since the team has put another player in his position. Pittman’s death also creates much strife among his surviving family members and Hawks higher-ups.
If all stays on track, the remaining five installments in Season Two will air consecutively on Wednesday nights, concluding with the season finale “There’s the Door” on February 20. Necessary Roughness will then return later this year for a third season, currently set at ten episodes. Considering that USA Network has canceled what I consider to be “so many” of its entertaining original shows — Sarah Shahi series Fairly Legal and newb cop dramedy Common Law among them — fans should be thankful for any more Necessary Roughness they can get.
