ABC Family’s ‘Roommates’ and ‘Sophie’ Over Already

Wow! That Was Fast!

Roommates

If you’ve been watching and enjoying ABC Family’s recent more adult-oriented sitcoms Roommates and Sophie, I’ve got some bad, sad news for you. Just five episodes in, the generally teen-oriented network has abruptly decided that both Monday-night comedies simply aren’t hacking it when it comes to ratings.

As a result, the Canadian series Sophie is gone as of its last episode, “Dr. Who?,” the fifth of 13, which premiered on April 20. Interestingly, Canada’s CBC network canceled the show at the end of March after two seasons for an identical reason — extremely poor ratings.

The American original comedy Roommates will fare a bit better, however. Instead of yanking it immediately, ABC Family has opted for a shorter-than-planned season by burning off the remaining eight of 13 installments during two four-episode mini-marathons. The two-hour blocks will air on Monday, April 27 and May 4, from 9pm to 11pm ET.

I watched the first two episodes of both series, and while I enjoyed Sophie more than Roommates, neither comedy was funny or interesting enough to make me a fan or even a regular casual viewer. So, I totally understand why they didn’t catch on with audiences, especially those who prefer more typical ABC Family programming.

  1. awww, i love that roomates show! it was soo cute. it reminds me alot of the show, what i like about you, with amanda bynes. i wish it wasnt cancelled. :(

    1. Well, hopefully the cast members will all show up in new series soon.

  2. Well, well, well. I suppose what goes around comes around huh ABC Family? Maybe now they’ll reconsider the cancellation of Kyle XY. Perhaps the network execs should have a nice long discussion about whether or not the disgruntled fans of the beloved (for now) cancelled show had anything to do with this. We will have our show back…

    1. Roth, I doubt ABC Family plans on bringing Kyle XY back (don’t I wish), but you have an interesting take on why the sitcoms might have failed. I imagine lots of Kyle fans made a point of not watching in protest over that cancellation. Totally understandable.

  3. god dang it! this was an exceptional show!!

  4. i think the show was absolutely hilarious!!! It should be re-aired on a new network!!!!!!!!!!! please please!!

    1. Alaina, you might get what you wish for one day, but I definitely wouldn’t hold my breath waiting.
